The worst part about it on Bioshock 2 is that you don't automatically replenish health...so if you are out of health packs, your screen stays like that, for a while! Frustrating. And I turned off the helmet first thing too!
Some handle it well: Gears, Uncharted, Modern Warfare, Killzone 2. Others, not so much: Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2.
When implemented correctly, I like it better than a health bar. Wait...Bioshock HAS a health bar too! WTF?
Its stupid, because right at the moment where you need to see where your enemies are so you can evade/kill them you can't because your screen is covered in a red tint. Around the edges is fine but not over the whole screen!!

You can turn off the helmet in the options menu. |
Ah, did not realize that. I haven't played enough to fiddle around in the options menu, I'll do that next time I play (I only play when the wife is around since she likes the music and doesn't like Mass Effect). Thanks!
That still doesn't excuse the fact for the needless red screen thing. It's a great idea in some games, other games, not-so-much.
I would have to say Bioshock 2 is the worst example of it lately.
Bioshock does this? It certainly does sound annoying. Guess they were going for some sort of 'realism' but like you said, probably not fit for this game.
Thought for a sec your ps3 died

I think it adds realism to the game but if you wanna be realistic at least give the player the ability to wipe the blood off the visor... geez
poor newman...even though he did ruin everything at jurassic park

It can add to immersion, not so much the realism and I get having the red screen for games with little to no HUD, but Bioshock 2 (and Mass Effect 2, and most other games that use it) have the life displayed very prominantly right there for you to see. The red screen is there *only* to get in your way.
I get that it's trying to make things more dire when you're in danger, but fuck, it shouldn't be that much of a pain in the ass when you don't even need it in the first place.
