He should watch that GH South Park episode.

True.... Although I am an ind responsibility guy the teachs and profs need to be held to example as well. I favor merit pay and firing of bad teachers. |
For that to work, you'd need a surplus of teachers (hint: there isn't one, the education system is always under-staffed) and decent pay.
@sguy: Don't even pretend like no high school education is even remotely comparable to a bad one. Plus, Raleigh has some very good high schools, 2-3 of which are in the top 100 in the nation.
But I though the was going to have home tutors? Anyway, why do we even care about what this kid does?

He's getting an education. He's getting home schooled by tutors. Honestly, you don't think you could sleep through highschool, and still graduate? Be honest. The only think I remember about Raleigh was douchebag redneck cops that loved to stick it to Marines coming and going to and from their homes during vacation times. Nice little racket those assholes have going extorting cash from the guys and gals serving the country.

Wow, nice way to generalize 1) cops and 2) Raleigh in general. Sounds like you got pulled for speeding. Sucks. Happens to everyone, though, everywhere. Get over it. Raleigh is one of the fastest growing areas in the nation and has Raleigh Charter High School (Ranked in the top 20 schools in America, peaking one year at 9), Broughton High School (Ranked all over the top 100 based on the year), and Enloe High School (In and out of the top 100).
Edit: I know several kids who've been homeschooled, and from what I've seen, how good the homeschooling is depends a lot on how much you care. All the kids I know who couldn't care less about school and were homeschooled hardly learned anything. They rarely did work, and just abused the system to get their diploma. I doubt they could pass any of the 9th grade standardized tests. All the kids who cared benefited greatly from going at their own pace. I wonder which one this guy will fit into?

Way to genaralize yourself. The cops in the Raleigh to Rock Hill, and Jacksonville to Wilmington areas I have been anywhere near are the biggest douchebags on the face of the Earth. I'm not going to "get over" made up reasons to pull people over that happened to plenty of people I knew, as well as myself; usually based off of the fact we had NY plates as well. And what exactly does this have to do with the schooling in the area? I never once questioned whether their was any worse schooling there than anywhere else (Although judging from the ignorant pigs that prowl I-95, maybe I should). I couldn't care less whether people want to abuse the system to get their diploma to be perfectly honest. It's his life, his choice. Some just aren't geared for school life, and that's fine. I don't see the point of trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Sometimes it just can't be forced.
Personally, I never see professional gaming taking off because for people to be able to make a living off of it prize money and endorsements need to increase by several orders of magnitude; and the only way that would happen is if dramatically more people cared who won these competitions. With that said, even if it is a viable career path (like professional sports can be) the number 1 priority in your child’s life has to be school; and everything else comes after that.

The plural of anecdote is not data. I'm not going to deny that all cops aren't perfect. I'm not a big fan of them myself. But calling a whole area of cops douche bags because you and your friends are upset over being pulled isn't really reasonable. I've commuted 20-30 miles a day through the Raleigh area for three years, and drive farther than that weekly to hang out with friends, and I've been pulled once. It was for a legit reason as well. I think my experience in the area far exceeds yours.
I was talking about schooling in the area because that's what I mentioned in the post you quoted when you went off on Raleigh cops. Since I assumed your post was somehow on topic (and thus related to schooling in Raleigh)--otherwise it'd be against the rules, and I don't want to report you for that--I made the only logical conclusion: that you were somehow implying that Raleigh's schooling must only be good for producing redneck cops who hate on Marines (this assumption seems pretty reasonable based on your comments about "pigs who prowl I-95).
Some just aren't geared for school life? Without at least a high school education, this kid's looking at flipping burgers for the rest of his life. No one thinks school's cool or anything, but they recognize its value, and put effort into it as a result. This kid just doesn't give a shit. The fact that his parents let him drop out to play GH suggests that he's been spoiled all his life and can't even begin to see the consequences of his actions.

Well, I lived in the area for three years myself, and had been pulled over for the various crap, like telling me I was pulled over for swaying in the lane to give a ticket for a lightbulb being out on the right hand side of my license plate. Bull. I have had plenty of experience with the swine there to make a pretty good estimate of the majority in the area. Regardless, I think an education is a helpful thing for most people, and I would agree with you on that. However, there are plenty of people that can go about finding workshort of flipping burgers by finding specialties outside of traditional education. I'm not saying it's not an idiotic goal that this kid has.
