Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony to answer Geohot's hack by removing other OS support ?

Whats the Linux homebrew scene like on the PS3? Does it have a vibrant homebrew community? What kind of apps can you run on it? Emus? The idea of a commercial console embracing homebrew is pretty neat but I'm afraid I'm not familiar with it on the PS3.

You know...to play games that release after the Firmware Update, you have to update it...yes, you too dsister...

I believe that is if you wish to play online.

Don't log into PSN and you can play no problem.

@dister44

Good thing I have a 60GB.

I this hack is the real deal I have no issues waiting for a custom firmware.

Call me cheap, call me a bastard, call me a POS but I would much rather copy my retail PS1 games to me PC and convert them to play on my PS3 rather than need to pay for them to be in digital form.

This is why I love my PSP, I was playing FFVII and FFVIII long before their PSN arrivals plus I already can play Vagrant Story, FFIX, Chrono Cross, etc...

you do know that the PS3 has PS1 BC right?

you can play all those games since launch and do not need custom firmware.

I'm glad sony is doing this if the exploit is real. missing a feature that nobody cares v.s. ruining my gaming experience because of privacy.

I know all PS3s support PS1 titles and mine is a 60GB so it also supports PS2 titles.

What I am saying here is that I like being able to play FFVII on my PSP, which is done by copying my retail disc to my PC and then converting it into a readable form for my custom firmware PSP.

I think I should normally be allowed to do this with games I already own instead of having to spend money again to be able to transfer them to my portable device. It is a feature I enjoy having, there are so many titles I own that are not available on PSN what so ever and I like having the option of putting them on my portable whenever I please since I own the disc.

Also just so you know, piracy isn't ruining YOUR gaming experience what so ever. How is someone downloading a game and playing it on PS3 (which isn't even possible for all we know) hurting your experience in any PS3 title?

Would me playing FFXIII from my HDD make your experience worse? If so please enlighten me as to how.

Edit -

Wow, you know what? My PS1 retail disc to digital arguement sounds a hell of a lot like the whole PSP Go arguement now doesn't it? It is the same thing as the people wishing they could take their UMDs and convert them to play on a GO instead of actually needing to spend the unecessary cash to play what they already paid for. Especially on a console that already supports those titles.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

Linux users have been hacking Ps3 for awhile now, I had a friend who was addicted to Home, and he had a TON of hacked items and the like.

I was going to post this earlier but it seems that the thread no longer exists on the Yellow Dog Linux forums.

If this were indeed true though, I would be upset with Sony disabling something they promised me when they sold me my 60GB PS3.

Don't blame Sony, blame hackers. I wouldn't expect anything less from Sony. I would do the same thing.

This logic should be followed also to ban private firearms, then. Why, instead, it's followed only when it favours industries' interests?

I have no Idea what you just said. Maybe speak stupid so I can.

Quite easy: other OS mode is used for legit purpose but also for piracy? Let's remove it.

Private firearms are used for self defense, but also for killing sprees? Let's ban them.

Uhm, those are two very completely different things and can't be compared. One you have the loss of a life the other you have the loss of doing other things on a PS3. Besides this is one company for the PS3, you have many companies that make firearms and they would have to be the ones who stop. Anyways that is more of a political thing not something as trivial as other OS.

They already removed other OS in the Slims this really shouldn't be that big of a deal I think. But I guess I never use it so it doesn't bother me if it happens.

Yes, I know, it was to show that if you stick to the principle of forbidding or stopping producing whatever is used ALSO for wrong purposes, you should stop doing anything. Whole stockfish was sometimes used as a club during brawls, in my town, should we ban it?

What's different, as you point out, is that here it's a single company decision on one of their products, that's fine, but to stop a single obscure exploit, that could have been done with a patch, they hurt and piss off a lot of honest users. It's the same criticism raised against some DRM systems, MS Product Activation, etc, but in this case there isn't just an uncomfortableness like in most of those cases, instead a feature is completely removed.

Oh well. maybe, if IBM is still interested too in the Cell, it will provide cheap HW kits and low end WS to developers, but right now PS3 is the only complete Cell system at low end PC price, the other choices are specialized embedded systems, coprocessing PCI cards or workstations, servers, blade units for clusters and computing nodes for supercomputers, all a lot more expensive than a PS3.

Privacy does ruin my gaming experience. I had my PS2 modded and I downloaded shitload of games.

I couldn't finish a single one of them as they do not have the same value to me as owning a precious game.

Same with the PSP.

Owen Stampflee Linux Product Manager for Fixstars Corporation made the following post in the yellowdog-boards(YellowDog Linux forums).

"Everyone,

I've caught a rumor from a reputable source that the next firmware update for old PS3s will remove the OtherOS feature...

I'm not sure if it's true or not but it's in the best interest of the YDL community to spread the word.

Cheers,
Owen"

It can be speculated that this is sony's answer to geohots exploit which utilizes the other os feature.

http://n4g.com/gaming/News-478833.aspx

Lock if already posted...

Did geohot ever show his "exploit" or was he full of shit?

Do you really think that most of the University's that use the PS3 for a cluster RUN ANY GAMES ON THEM ANYWAY? This update will not magically remove the OS from systems that are not updated (and if your cluster is working perfectly, WHY IN THE HELL WOULD YOU UPDATE IT?)

I run Linux on my PS3 for one simple reason, easy switch to watch videos. No need to worry about transcoding non-supported file formats, or using my ps3 as a media server, I just switch over with the OtherOS option (60gb PS3) and stream videos from my Samba Server. If I lose this feature, oh well, Ill just have to go back to using my Laptop from my bedroom.

For the record, I would rather not lose this option.

I like to play my PS1 JRPGs at work.

Also I thought you meant that other people playing pirated games hurt your retail experience.

I have the same issue as you when it comes to playing pirated games, I never finish them. To be honest I barely put over an hour into them. There just isn't that same satisfaction you get from retail versions. Sounds weird but it's true.

^ The " i don't enjoy playing pirated games as much as those i bought" part seems really.... i don't know, full of crap? Is it the same with movies? When you watch Dr House or any other show on the net instead of buying a dvd? When you dl a song from the net instead of buying a cd at the media store?

I may sound a little crude, but sometimes you can hear such overly righteous things on the net that it seems to be more for show than anything else.

If i lose access to this profile as well....I'm done with this site.....You've been warned!!.....whoever you are...

Happy Wii60 user. Me and my family are a perfect example of where hardcore meets casual and together mutate into something awesome.

Movies are completely different than games. One lasts 2 hours, the other last 4-5x as long.

I have games I always buy and I invest as much time as I can in them because

A. I paid for them.

B. These are games I know I will enjoy as I have read reviews, played demos, have a past history of enjoying games of that franchise.

Many of the games I have pirated are games I would have never spent my money on, so I go in with a different approach as I do with my purchased games.

Also not to try and make it seem even more ok to pirate games, but if I was never recommended to download ZSnes back in the day along with a Final Fantasy VI rom I probably would have never been as big into gaming as I am now, especially with JRPGs. Since then I have purchase every Final Fantasy game as well as buying an SNES cart and the GBA game Final Fantasy VI Advance.

My personal piracy success story.

Call it full of shit, but it is 100% true and and back in a day and age where demos weren't available piracy helped me find out which games and genres I enjoyed and now I have spend countless thousands of dollars on them and still do today with my 30+ game PS3 collection, 20+ game 360 collection and somewhat minimal Wii collection. If you take a look at my extensive collection in my profile you would probably be amazed to know that every single title I added is a title I own a physical copy of, plus considering I don't buy used I feel pretty damn good.

I'm still guilty as charged though when it comes to handhelds, that is why that part of my gaming collection is so small in my profile, but I actually rarely ever finish games there because I don't enjoy gaming on a handheld nearly as much as a console. I like playing on a big screen.

Long story I just told, but I feel good myself knowing it is absolutely true. I'm not as bad of a pirate as people think I am and there are plenty of others just like me. You could choose to believe it or not, I don't mind, but I'm content.

Also, nobody can know if what I say or what Kariya said it full of shit because my experience with games I wouldn't buy or probably enjoy in the first place probably largely differs from yours.

@Kyliedog

Majority of the games I would pirate these days are the games I wouldn't buy from what my preferences consider as "the crap pile". Mainly Wii party titles since I wouldn't mod my 360 and my PS3 is unable to be hacked. Other than a modded PSP and a DS flashcart I buy all my games.

I also never play my Wii, even with access to any titles I want. I use it as a way to store all my gorey over the top horror flicks on a 500GB HDD and use homebrew apps to allow me to watch them.
