How am I being selfish? Homebrew isn't illegal(and I even said that I will only do it if there is a way to play PS2 games(Something that should be on the PS3 to begin with!)). I opted to get a fat PS3 because it has many more features then the slim. I do not see why they should take away features that I already have. What's next? They're going to take away the ability to turn of my PS3 next?

Posting in here because I found this to be the best feature the PS3 had, ability to have a form of OS running on it. Really sad to see this go.

Also to people blaming piracy, please stop, it's Sony doing this, not the pirates.

No they do have a choice. They choice not to remove the OS. Most hackers don't even do it to pirate, they do it because it's a challenge. So please blame the people who are to blame and don't use a scapegoat. Sony is boning their customers, plain and simple.

While hackers do sometimes (not always) do it purely for the challenge of it. its pretty easy to see (psp and DS are a prime example, more so psp) that most people that use the hacks that these hackers develop for the challenge of it, do end up pirating in some form. Piracy in any shape or form only results in losers, from publishers to developers to gamers themselfs.

As for otherOs, yes its a big pain the ass that its going. for homebrew developers, linux on a ps3 is the cheapest method to programming for the cell architecture, for universities it was a cheap way of building a powerful beowolf cluster. I do feel sorry for them, but I don't think for a moment that sony is using the "piracy scapegoat" to screw those user over. They sell the console at a loss, still do, any _remote_ risk to game sales they simply got to stamp down else they might as well take the system off the market.

so lets just sum up. Sony have a fully hacked console which has insane piracy (Psp). PS3 got its hypervisor compromised via otherOS, Sony have responded by filing a patent on the hack methodology and are going to completely stamp out OtherOS for all of those actively using their ps3 for online gaming. They just can't afford the risk. period. Grow up and look at the bigger picture.

I'll grow up when you stop being ignorant and learn a hackers' motivation. The moment OtherOS stops working they will start working on other ways to hack it. That's the nature of a the people who invent the hacks in the first place. So the only thing this will do is egg people on. The when the next hack is found what will they do then? Removing OtherOS will not solve anything in the long term, plain and simple.  What will they do next time? Remove firmware it so you can't watch BDs on there? No I'm sorry, if Sony does remove OtherOS they are committing an extremely retarded move, and anyone blaming pirates on the removal is equaly idiotic.

People are still forgetting that there is nothing concrete going on with the "exploit"
even if you get more access, a 3d driver for linux will be very hard to write that's 1
and second if gameOS is encrypted and the keys can't be obtained by SW means than it's pretty useless that's 2.
and I remember at ps2dev there was a pretty big list of undocumented hypervisor function calls, what good If you can get some more without information?

guys this is just a rumor, i ran linux on my old ps3 for a while, but i am honestly not bothered about it, i would much rather have an up to date ps3 where i can play on all the ps3 games.
