Cos I'm at work right now I don't have that much time to read everything.

1st - If PS2 remains best selling console ever...who really cares

2nd - Wii will defo win this gen

They broke really fast, by myself I've had to buy 3 x PS2's

Nintendos all time prob with that is, what they produce is for lifetime. I still have a working NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube.
(Sega has had same prob than Nintendo)

By now, there is only probs with M$ and Sony (they break and you need to buy new console)

Wow, a lot of debate. Some good arguments some a little of the mark.

Either way, when comparing consoles whether or not its handheld or topbox, you have to keep the variables of the statistic consistent and fair.

Unfortunately the OP has skewed those variables. He is comparing the lifetime sales of the PS2 of 10+ years to the Wii whom he is estimating to have a shelf life of 6 years with no more support.

Also, the sales trend, is completely the opposite of his end numbers. The Wii is still selling very well, and the PS2 has now lost a huge chunk of momentum.

However, the devils advocate to that, is that the PS2 had a huge amount of good 3rd party support to maintain its selling trend as well as some other factors.

I don't know if the Wii will surpass the PS2, it all depends on Nintendo.

What I do know, (and it isn't very much), is that these goalposts have to stop moving or at least use a reasonable and equitable set of parameters when trying to justify an argument.

The Wii should do at least 20 mio units this year. Assuming it´ll sell at a weekly pace of 300k, the Wii would stand at 10,8 mio. units before Q4/10. The forths quarter is good for another 10 mio units, so we end up at 20mio+ units and so far, the Wii has performed better than 300k. So my guess is that the Wii will be close to 90mio units by the end of the year. If this happens, everything is possible.

Why do people keep saying ds when the title obviously states consoles? Unless they make a dsWii or something.

This is why the word "Home Console" was coined, and that is NOT in the OP, so the DS is not excluded.

DS and PSP's are Handheld Consoles....

Well it looks like he was right so its kinda funny looking at the early posts in this thread. Also DS probably won't reach ps2 now either as it is basically non existent with the 3ds already killing it off now that it is at mass market price. Ps2 deserves it its the best console of all time and a worldwide icon. Anyone I know who is even slightly into gaming had one cause it is basically the coolest piece of tech ever.
