The NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64 and the PS2 all had one thing in common. None of their successors had backwards compatibility.

The PS2 is still selling units because the PS3 is still pretty expensive. When the next Nintendo console is released i believe it will be backwards compatible and cheap enough.

This of course is unless Nintendo keeps the Wii around as a "Third Pillar"

ps3 always has had bc with ps1, and it had ps2 bc up until late 2007, and it returned in summer 2008 even.  The ps3 wasnt' successful enough out of the gates to take away from the ps2's steam though.  PS3 was expensive and not a casual friendly console.  I agree that the wii wont' have the same tail that the ps2 did but it may not have to, the wii is probably gonna be 10 million + ahead of the ps2 in the same period when the wii successor launches.  Whether that is enough or not is yet to be seen.

Except the Gameboy line had this.

The Wii's current worldwide sales is at 67.21 million copies. At this point its selling somewhere between 250-300k first week worldwide. Those worldwide sales could change at any time this year due to huge title releases, big titles being bundled with the console or the holiday season.

The Wii launched in 2006 and my guess is it could be discontinued by 2012 or 2013 (due to the fact that the average video game generation last 5-6 years)

The Playstation 2 has been on the market since 2000 and it will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of its release in Japan next month.

The current worldwide sales of the PS2 should be around 150 million copies and by the time its discontinued,(which I predicted early 2011), I predict the sales to be at 160 million copies worldwide.

The Wii will probably sell another 20 million copies in the next 2 to 3 years.

The sales of the Wii will be around 90 million copies and by then Nintendo will probably make the decision to discontinue the console.

So by 2011, The PS2 WW sales will be around 160 million copies

and

by 2012 or 2013, The Wii's WW sales will be at 90 or 100 million copies by the time its discontinued

The way I see it, it will be impossible for the Wii to outsell the PS2 in WW sales.

which means the PS2 will remain the best selling console of all time.

Thoughts?

I KNEW IT WAS A PSFAN SINCE I SAW THE TITLE OF THE THREAD!

Well, DS say hello and will kick your PS2 within 5 years.

considering the fact that ps2 is just seeing release in several countries, and the DS verges on being 2 distinct systems, I'd say it was hardly a fair comparison.

The only way the wii will continue to sell in 5 years is if Nintendo can somehow keep it as their only console. From what I've seen, backwards compatibility destroys any emulated console. So, if it does outsell PS2 in 5 years, wii2 probably will not have BC, or wii will still be the only Nintendo home console.

Verging on isn't actually being so, unless it's about the DSiWare games or GBA pack games, and those are few compared to the rest of the library, which works the same on all the systems, hence why it's one system. I'm not splitting the PS2 into two systems just because of the HDD and online plug differences.

Why do many of you still think the Wii will magically stop selling just because there is another system?

bc is a pretty new thing, but it never stopped the ps1 from selling a long time after the ps2 came out.  Just because it has BC doesnt' mean it will stop selling, i don't where you get any evidence of this.

well there isn't exactly data to show what happened to ps1 sales when ps2 came out, but for the xbox and gc, both divebombed..I wonder if GBA did the same...

a quick search came up with this. 2004 is 10 years after the launch of ps1. The market has grown a lot since then, and wii will sell a lot more than the ps1.

2004 - 5,000 / 2.54 million
2003 - 34,000 / 4,14 million
2002 - 233,000 / 5.7 million
