Well after reading in context, the writer is simply playing off the joke of "Sonic is no good now and we want old school sonic back". Actually it is more of a strike against the Sonic haters than anyone that has bought this game. Although I know Kotaku is notorious for their Nintendo bias, i don't think this is an example of it at all. Just some thrown in humor at a certain group of anti-sonic people.

Oh, the article was a spoof. Although their past articles make me not want to go there anymore, or else I would likely have clicked on that and seen so.

Regardless, I take about half my comment before back (but they did still bitch about the Mario games's sales).
