Lost Odyssey did get tiring after a while, and there is some grinding necessary (of course not for levels but to get your immortals all the right skills) but I loved the fact that there were not spikey-haired angsty teenagers, a pretty unique skill system, some actually very touching moments (oh, Lirum) and very good music.

I'm a level-grinding guy though, so I have no problems with Jrpg's at all. I don't like SRPG's though, which is disappointing because there is an insane amount of love for Valkyria Chronicles here. (Best RPG this gen accoring to the thread actually)

For what its worth, i never liked any kind of SRPG ever *i blame you FF Tactics!* but... Valkyria isn't your average SRPG, both in story and in gameplay, and for once high quality english voice acting, its the only game japanese oriented that makes you know that there are some good english voice acters out there.

And there is level grinding in VC, so to speak... the classes of each solider has a level system to master for each which could easily be counted as a level grind.

You've almost convinced me, one more question: Are there trophies? I don't NEED them but it has to be a hell of a game for me to play it without them. I did play MGS4 though, so that level or above.

Also, I forgot there was one SRPG I loved, Shining Force on the Genesis. Is VC as good as that?

There should be a demo of it on PSN, check it out if you're interested. It gives you a good idea of how the basic gameplay is.

OT
I wouldn't really recommend Blue Dragon. The story is pretty meh, as are the characters (I hated just about everyone but Shu). I'm not actually sure why I played it so much. I guess I at least enjoy the atmosphere and the simple gameplay. The music is nice, as well.

I should really try the older DQ's... it seems like they excel in this.

Great game, but I thought the story was kinda........cheesy. But I enjoyed the battle system very much. I would give the game a solid 8.6/10.
I actually might replay the game again.

Uematsu's final boss themes has always been special.

That song is tied with this as my favorite final boss music...

Former something....

Valkyria Chronicles is pretty good. The addition of real time actions occurring during movement really helps distinguish Valkyria Chronicles from most games in the SRPG catagory. SEGA adding a real time element to Valkyria Chronicles made the game alot more enjoyable for me.

Ah, Sega made this right? Hmm. . . well they did make the other SRPG I liked. You guys have convinced me! Now I just need to find time to play, which with the release schedule this year may be 2011!

Edit: Sorry about derailing your thread Khuutra! I'm gone!

I love blue dragon .. from end of disc 2 it starts to really pick up tho..

LO is great game but the Temple of Enlightenment was hella annoying

EDIT:

and also regarding BDragon by the end of disc 2 it gets quite dark as well and the story adds a twist I've never seen before in any RPG..

I haven't played LO (probably won't seeing as I'm confined (monetarily speaking) at the moment to two systems).
Like others have said, try more games in the Dragon Quest series. I've recently conquered IV (like you stated, exhausting, yet satisfying) and moving onto V.

CT is on the DS now too.

Nah it's cool

SPRGs are kind of a subset of JRPGs

I just don't want the old stupid "WRPG vs. JRPG" or "Best Final Fantasy" arguments up ins

What platforms are you looking at? Just consoles or are handhelds included?
