Forums - Gaming Discussion - How relevant is a review score to you gamers?

I honestly stopped caring about review when I figured that their opinion is pretty much the same as anyone else I talk to in my daily life. Reviews are too inconsistent (one site gives a game a 10, the other a 7 and another a 3). Too much contradiction. The context doesn't match the score. Reviewers nowadays tend to be too obviously biased, when I am pretty sure they are not suppose to be. They let their emotions affect the score and also when a game doesn't live up to the hype but is still a good game, they destroy it.

Oohhhh and money talks. It comes to a point where you ask yourself are these guys paid to give the game a good score or is this score real?

I'll go on my impression of a demo more than review score. If there's a game I'm really interested in the review score won't relly affect my decision to buy. If there's a game I don't really care for then high review scores won't affect my decision to not buy. If there's a game I think I may like but I'm not sure then review scores will probably sway my decision if there's nothing else upon which to make a decision.

examples:
Bayonetta, the demo didn't really impress me, so the review scores aren't going to convince me to buy (post patch Bayonetta should be sufficiently comparable to 360 as makes no difference).

Dante's Inferno, I liked the demo, and if it wasn't for the impending God of War III it would be on my get soon list, as it is it's on my get eventually list. Review scores didn't influence me.

Darksiders seemed like a maybe but wasn't really on my radar, the reviews coming in for it has probably put it ahead of Dante's Inferno on my list of H'n'S games to get. I may end up getting it before GoW III comes out if the price drops a wee bit more.

Ignore the reviews for Darksiders, I thought it was nothing short of pure brilliance, I would give it a 9/10, at least rent it, then you will know for yourself.

I like very few games, so a game getting a 95% means nothing to me. If its a game i'm interested in i don't care if it gets 5/10 across the board.

I value the words inside more than the score. What I got from the Dante's Inferno reviews in a nutshell was that it was a God of War clone. I like God of War, so naturally I should like this game, not hate it. I don't care about the score given that is a result of it's lack of originality. I just care that it copied off the right game.

You'll find that outside of the scoring, a lot of reviews are very helpful.

Wow, first post got it right. If I know I really want a game, a review score won't affect that unless the review says that theres a bunch of things wrong with it (frame rate is bad, story might be bad, gameplay gets boring etc) . If the game turns out to be what I expect based off of gameplay vids, then the review score won't change my mind. To use the same example, right off the bat I was hyped for Dante's Inferno because of the similarities that it has with GoW, and I didn't even check metacritic to see what it averaged, I just bought it. Same thing I did with Bayonetta, and will do with Bioshock 2, and GoW III.

It's really all about preference. For example, let's say you're into the action genre games. Naturally you will tend to like these games more, even if the game is poorly reviewed. I believe reviewers try to be as objective as possible (well as least the good ones), and create a score that can be used as a general reference.

I tend to look for games in the genres I like, and then check the metascore. I compare the potential purchase's score with another's score of the same genre that i played and enjoyed

What's a game review score?

That should answer your question.

If there is a game i haven't heard about that's getting some raging good reviews ill check it out.

If there is a game i have my eyes on that are getting no good reviews i still pick it up as usually i still find them quite entertaining.

CURRENTLY PLAYING:  Warframe, Witcher 2

I used to listen to scores. You now back when the scores 1-7 sill existed. You know, back when OT and Metroid Prime were #1 and 2. Then this generation came along, and the shittiest games have gotten scores over 8 that it just does not matter anymore.

No point in renting, because I know I wanna get it. I'm really tight about spending money on games so it has to be in the right price range for me to just up and buy it. Darksiders isn't there yet; but I will be buying it new because I want to support the game more directly than simply buying used. I also mis-wrote because I'll be waiting for GoW III to drop in price before I buy that too, so I will probably get Darksiders before GoWIII regardless.
