Forums - General Discussion - BluRay, I hate you sometimes.

It's sad, I want to love BluRay so much.  I exclusively buy and rent them now but there are still a few things that pisses me off about them: I have to watch 10 minutes of previous and it doesn't remember where I stopped.

Sometimes I can at least press skip and skip through 20 or so previews, sometimes I can't skip and I have to fast forward through 10 minutes of previous.  Did they really not learn from early DVD's that people just want to press menu and go right to the menu and that people also hate long animated menu intros?

Also, another thing-- why the Hell can I not turn off my PS3, come back a day later, and return right to where I was?

I started Inglorious Bastards last night, stopped it, and continued it tonight and after sitting through a bunch of crap I didn't want to see it started me right at the beginning of the movie.

Again, a step down from DVD's.

It was so great with DVD's-- I could press menu and go straight to the menu and even skip most long animated menu intro and when I turned the DVD player off, it would remember where I was when I turned it back on.  Why would they get rid of these two great features with BluRay?

High quality image? Got to have that.

Lots of storage? Sure, the more the merrier!

Skipping previews and remember where you stopped?  Those have to go.

I mean really, I'm watching a freaking BluRay, why do you have to advertise it to me and why can I not just skip it and go straight to the menu?

Damn are you being serious I've never seen bluray movies but im going too now that i have a ps3

...

I have honestly no idea what you are talking about. When I watch a blu-ray, my PS3 will remember where I was the last time I watched, there are barely any previews, and by pressing square, the menu will pop up while the movie is playing. It doesn't get much simpler.

Maybe it's because I live in EU, but still...

I don't know if it's different with a controller and a remote but it never remembers where I am no matter how I turn it off (press stop and then power off or just power off) and I don't think I own a single BluRay where I can go right to the menu and I have like 40-50 of them.

The real kick in the nuts are the ones that don't even let you skip the previews, they make you fast forward through them all.  Then there are also really annoying ones like the Battlestar Galactica ones where the first disc of every season has the same intro by the director that you can't skip and since it also doesn't remember where you stopped you have to watch it every time.

-edit-

Also, I do admit that things like Lost that have season play work fine.  I can start and stop those and the PS3 remember where I stop, other than season play, it doesn't remember where I stop my movies which is a giant pain in the ass.

Ouch that sounds terrible. I don't watch physical media and I haven't for years so I forget what its like.

Tease.

Tell me the exact steps you go through to stop your movie and then start it up and I can make a video of mine not remembering where it stopped (NOTE-- it'll be tomorrow because I'm going to bed).

Well, I just stop playing the movie and turn my ps3 off...simple as that..

Are you sure that you're not selecting "Play From Beginning" option ?

@ twesterm

That's just weird. I use my normal controller, and I think that what I usually do is press O to exit and I'll be asked if I want to quit playback. I haven't tried it not remembering where I watched to, no matter when I resume, and no matter how many games or other movies I watch and play before resuming.

Sounds like an issue with the playback as my PS3 always seems to remember where I was with BR.  Perhaps you accidently changed a setting or are switching off playback in a way it doesn't like?

As for the other points I agree.  Sadly, BR, like DVD before it, still seems to be in the throes of early releases (I know it's been out a while, but that's clearly what it is) where too often companies are going too far with menu capabilities and fancy animation that just gets in the way.  Plus, of course, some titles (it varies by studio I find) can't resist trying to force you to watch their adverts no matter what.  It's a pain, particularly as you say they could just learn from DVD and go straight to Go.

In the end I just want a button I can press that says 'skip the crap and take me to the movie I paid for'.

On PS3 I think pressing square is supposed to take you straight to the main menu, and sometimes it does, but on some BR I think it's disabled, which is nice.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
