Forums - Gaming Discussion - Microsoft, Sony Compared in XBL, PSN Numbers

Its the little things that everyone forgets to recognize with Live that make it the superior service. Here is a good example of one:
My friend had a launch 360, he decided to sell it on Ebay because he wanted to pick up one of the new elites. What he thought, and what I thought as well, was that all his saved games and progress would be lost once he sold his old 360 with the hard drive. When he plugged his Elite in and signed in on his gamertag not only did it recognize his achievement score (which I knew would happen) but it recognized what level, titles, emblems, weapons, etc he had in MW2. No need to transfer anything from his old HD. Everything is linked to your gamertag and Live does an amazing job of doing this. I also know he will be able to redownload all his previously downloaded and paid for arcade games at no cost (since its linked to his gamertag).
Live is definately the better service.

Wheres a facepalm pic when I need one...

PSN does the exact same thing they both transfer over the essentials when you switch consoles, as for the MW2 porgress, you have Infinity Ward to thank for that because there servers remember your level, weapons, ect. and they do it on both systems.

Disregarding his facepalm moment I think XBL is better for it having more features, but PSN is more accessible for me because I don't have to pay $50 and $80 for a wifi adapter both which are free of charge with PS3.

2010 Hardware Sales Predictions

Wii: 20m- Sales will drop, but not by much.

PS3: 13.5m- It sold 12m in 2009, its only common sense it will sell more this year.

Xbox 360: 11m- It sold 11m in 2008 and 2009, I think it will sell the same.

My Fanboy Speech...

Why do you have to make excuses to defend a product that you purchased, but that's the only connection you have to it, you don't make it, you don't lose or gain money on it. I don't see where all of the defensiveness comes in, there is no reason for you or anybody else to feel obligated to defend it. Now I would understand if one of you were a developer for the product and you slaved over said product only to hear somebody call it stupid or a piece of junk. But none of you developed it, none of you are mature enough to realize that. Choosing a product all comes down to preference, you chose said product because it is best for you. Simple as that!

Well I've played cod mw2 on both systems quite often and xbox has usually at least 2x the amount of players. Psn has at the most around 500k people while xbox at the most I've seen around 1.2 million.

Your analysis is flawed in that you're looking at a single game that has sold about twice as much on 360 as it has on PS3. The numbers are bound to be in favor of 360 in this case. We really need numbers for all games at all times.

Well most multiplatform games sell more on 360, especially the online ones. PSN numbers aren't accurate either because everyone I know with a PS3 has at least 4 different PSN accounts as they are free and you also have to take into account the PSP etc.

One way to gauge which is truly seeing more use would be to compare the highest number of users signed into each service at its busiest period. Unfortunately, though Microsoft has said its record is 2.3 million, Sony hasn't provided that information. We've contacted the company and asked, so we'll update when we heard back.

That pretty much says it all.  If Sony's network was as popular you can bet they would have released those numbers.

did you even read the whole article?? or did you just stop to make a fanboy comment cuz you saw something you liked

Having experianced both, I can safely say xbox live is a better service!!

I thought we were talking about users being logged in and actually playing? You can't log in with 4 different accounts and play 4 games on a single PS3, same with PSP.

PSN = PS3 + PSP + PC (forums) + multiple accounts + inactive accounts = 40 million
XBL = Xbox 360 Gold Active* accounts = 23 million

*Active means activity within the last month of this check. Most trial cards expire within days so not many trials or inactive accounts are counted to inflate the numbers.

So they definately don't include Silver accounts then?

These numbers are mostly meaningless.

PSN numbers includes more than just PS3 numbers. (PSP/PC)
XBox live totals include Windows Live accounts.
Both probably include duplicate/inactive accounts.

The XBox live gold number quoted above are from January, so it includes everyone that got a 360 for Christmas and was still on their 1 month Free Gold trial.

I would assume that both the 360 and PS3 have similar "active accounts" to "console sales" ratios. That would put active 360 Live account about 20% higher than active PS3 PSN accounts, bases on console sales numbers. (with about half of the Live account being gold members)

I like PSN more obviously because it is free but to me it is also easier to navigate. I think I also like the layout better.

Well going by this article it appears they don't.  I'm not sure where this article got its information, but the article states 23 million Gold subscribers.  Before I think they used to just give a combination of Gold/Silver and stated it as simply xx million "active" accounts.  Actually this article doesn't even state "active" anywhere like I thought it did.  It's merely the total Gold subscribers I guess.
