Personally (and this is where people accuse me of bias or whatever) I think Sony's definition of "sold" to retail must include things like replacement units or demo units or something that we aren't classing as a "sale". The fact we are 7-8m lower on PS2 and PSP as well would support this idea. They used to report "production shipments" which was 2-3m units higher still each quarter and definitely included every single unit that left the production line, but supposedly changed to "ship-in" or "sold to retail" a few years back to move in line with Nintendo and Microsoft. Problem is that I still don't think they have moved in line and their figures are inflated for some reason.

The bottom line is that I don't have a definitive answer to your question, just theories.

All I know is that we estimate sell-through and that compared to everyone else our figures line up. Why it seems that there are 3m PS3 units that have been sold by Sony but not in the hands of consumers and 7-8m PS2 and PSP units is something I don't have an answer for, but I'm pretty sure that our figures are an accurate representation of how many units have actually been purchased by consumers at retail.

I've been saying the same thing in other threads ie they've been counting the airforce sales or sales to other institutions. Although it's just a theory, I'm glad to know that such possibilities are considered on your part as well.

Also, I've been wondering if there might be a price drop in the rest of the world coming up. That coupled with the numerous high-profile games about to release makes me think that there are a lot stockpiles hanging out somewhere.

Thanks for the reply!

I'm glad this thread clears alot of things up

BUMP for the greater good ^^

Sony stated that what they reported as sold is all recorded sales by retailers. That means all consoles ordered by 12/31/2009. So on the last day of the year XYZ retailer order 100K PS3s that dont ship until sometime in 2010 are counted. How many other PS3s fall into that category? We dont know.

OK so that is part of it. No one is saying that 3 million PS3s sit on store shelves. What Sony said was they have been ordered by retailers. So that means some havent been made, some havent actually shipped out and some are on boats, trucks, and trains in transport. So that means some sit on store shelves all over the world.

I also guaranteed that post December the retailers are not ordering 1 PS3 for every 1 of the PS3s they sell. They will let the quantity on hand knowing they wont sell as many and knowing Sony will have more closer to the retail outlets and if a run happens it will be easier to get replenishments.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

I think the problem that most people are finding is that there are too many consoles in the wild as compared to the sold values reflected industry-wide.

I have several thoughts on what it could be, but I was curious to know if you had any extraordinary reasonings. Care to share your thoughts?

I think it's a stockpiling issue coupled with a distribution problem...

Or it could be Sony counting shipped as "Sold to retailers" + "New models used for replacements of broken systems."

Counting the replacement models as "sold" to themselves.

I love the vgchartz forums. But the way numbers are handled is raising some serious questions about the accuracy of the sales here...For example, we adjust numbers according to NPD...when numbers are released by companies, vgchartz adjust certain software...but its the closest to the real thing when we get those adjustments right...

So vgchartz numbers are not correct when they first pop-up, but will be in a few months time...I'm happy with that tbh..so people should stop bitching about it.

I won't go into detail, but I know there will be adjustments by the end of this quarter.

If Ioi adjusted based on NPD PS3 sales would be adjusted downwards... not upwords.

So i don't think you want to be preaching about following the trackers on this one...

Your intentions seem fairly apparent.

Either way, Ioi doesn't adjust numbers to NPD.

How did you jump to that conclusion ?

And ioi did adjust numbers to show similar patterns to NPD in Nov and Dec...

Previous posting habits... and those changes weren't due to NPD... but other information that would have to correlate with it. Ioi doesn't adjust because of NPD. They do the same thing Ioi does and also are missing pieces of the puzzle.
