It depends on what your PC can handle 
It is supposedly possible to get 100 vs 100 going at once.
My shit computer could only get 50 on screen at a time, and had to load the rest mid battle once the on screen troops got killed off.

That's a video of a 200 unit battle.. it is recommended you stick with about 100 troops at once though, since it tends to lag at 200.
If you are talking about how many troops you can have, I think it's either 999 or over that. It's hard to upkeep though.

I guess what you have to do is download a mod that ups the max amount of soldiers on the field so you can get hundreds of people on both sides.
This game is awesome... not to mention there's a ton of mods for it, like 1866 (Old West mod, complete with Winchesters and Colts), and WWII China Battlefield. The polish is a bit lacking for both the core game and the mods, but in this case, it's pretty much all about the core gameplay. That, and the system requirements aren't too taxing on most modern systems, making it fairly easy to have 100 vs 100 battles.

looked into it, was solt by strat's comments in the game review, then found out that you could'nt be king without the machina mod or something and that there is a standalone expansion comming out...
you experts think the expantion will be worth it or should it be fine with just the mod?
think the expantion will get the same type of mod support by the community too??
