Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Who is more important to Nintendo? Gunpei Yokoi or Shigeru Miyamoto?

If you asked anyone at Nintendo, they'd probably say Miyamoto (if only to cover up their shameful behavior concerning Yokoi in the past). But to be honest, I'd say it's much closer to a tie, or possibly even in Yokoi's favor. Yokoi isn't just responsible for the hardware that Nintendo made -the NES, Game Boy, and SNES- and more than one of the series, he's also the founder of the entire philosophical branch -"lateral thinking with withered technology"- which made Nintendo great, brought Nintendo down when they forgot it, and then brought them back to the top when they remembered.

There's also the fact that he trained Miyamoto.

Uhh, where are you getting he created the NES and SNES from?  Masayuki Uemura was responsible for them.  Gunpei Yokoi's relationship with Masayuki Uemura can most likely be described the same with he described his relationshiped with Miyamoto: "[Miyamoto] would do the creating while I supervised."

Yokoi. He also did the game and watch series of handheld and created some extremely successful toys during Nintendo's toy manufacturing days.

Shigeru Miyamoto without a doubt.

some people are forgetting yokoi did help with some early games. definately most notably the metroid series, so he has at leats one huge fan franchise behind him, he invented portable gaming, there about equal in my opinion, nintendo would not exist today without one or the other.

Yokoi. As I explained in the other thread.

I would've blurred out Miyamoto just because of the games, but I still picked Yokoi for his philosophy and that's being backed up by the company and Miyamoto himself!

As well, rest in peace Gunpei-san. You may be gone, but not forgotten!

And proud member of the Mega Mario Movement!

This should be titled "who was" considering one of them isn't around anymore...

Miyamoto, since software sells hardware and not vice versa.

Gunpei by a long way! Having said that having had 2 monster geniuses at one place is extraordinary.
