Maybe my question was stupid, as I just rememberd that Mario is an arcade game, and I used to love the Arcades and replay them all the time.
I guess it's the feeling, the flow and the atmosphere that makes you enjoy games like these, and like Rol said perfecting stuff.
Rol, how did u approach F-Zero GX the wrong way? |
When the game was released, I was totally into F-Zero time attack. There was a website (fzerocentral, doesn't exist anymore) that kept track of records that users submitted. It had an interesting way of determining the rankings of players as well as some cool comparison tools. That's why I got hooked.
When F-Zero GX finally came out, I just focused on unlocking all the tracks and vehicles to move on to time attack as soon as possible and submit my times. Turned out that this wasn't really fun at all. I quickly got annoyed at so many things and eventually I asked myself the question if the reason I am playing the game is the right one. I didn't enjoy the game, but forced myself to play time attack. The only way I could possibly have fun with F-Zero GX was to simply not bother with time attack and over time I also stopped to play the other F-Zero games for time attack purposes.
That's probably the reason why I am not a big fan of achievements. A good game doesn't need them to motivate the player to keep playing.

Yeah, u got a classic example there of the 'drug'-syndrome with games, especially if it's competitive with other players. I got so hooked by rankings in a couple of online shooters, same with a MMORPG and the leveling, item-hunting etc, and only after a long time of frustration you realize it's all been a big pain and no fun lol.
