Recently we've seen a whole bunch of games relying on parkour (free running) as the basis of gameplay, and the gaming world has appreciated it a fair bit. Although parkour has been present in games for many years already, they haven't looked as good nor have they been core game mechanics until now. Here are some games released in the past 2-3 years relying heavily on parkour:
1.) Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
2.) Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
3.) Prototype
4.) Mirror's Edge
5.) Prince of Persia
6.) Infamous
7.) Assassin's Creed
8.) Assassin's Creed 2
9.) The Saboteur
It feels like these games show what the future will be like: fast paced and anything goes. Games like Metal Gear Solid 4 can feel very sluggish due to the need to click an action button for snake to perform preset moves as well as the limitations as to where he can walk or climb. As opposed to games that utilize parkour, where you can move from place to place without having to think about it, the gameplay is much smoother, more engaging, more real, and there is far more freedom of movement.
Will parkour be the permanent standard in future action games, and shall we do away with "action buttons"?
