Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 'Steadily Increasing' Market Share Across the Globe

Source: industrygamers.com: www

Research and Markets has released a new report on the growth trends of video consumer devices, including gaming consoles. From a geographical standpoint, the report found that Sony's PS3 is doing a good job increasing its global footprint.

"The PS3 is dominant in Japan and Korea, and as of June 2008, has begun to outsell the Xbox 360 in Europe. It is also steadily increasing its market share in all other regions across the globe, including in the North American market," the report said, while noting that the Xbox 360 still sells more than the PS3 in North America, and consequently, 360 sales still beat PS3 in total worldwide sales.

Even so, PS3 sales have been surging (44% over the holidays) and SCEA senior vice president of Marketing and PlayStation Network, Peter Dille, recently insisted that PS3 will eventually overtake Xbox 360

Research and Markets also noted that the Americas market should remain the largest for all the console makers through 2013. That said, "The high population density and rapid uptake of technology in countries such as Japan and Korea, and to a lesser extent in Singapore and Hong Kong, see a disproportionately high level of console sales compared to the rest of the world. Console sales are also fairly high in Western Europe and are growing considerably in the emerging markets of Eastern Europe, Latin America, and other areas in Asia."

Speaking of emerging markets, Sony's aging PS2 hardware is expected to continue to be a top seller in those regions but will drop off considerably in more established markets. In fact, the global sales dip for 2009 was blamed largely on the precipitous declines of PS2 software in the U.S., U.K. and Japan.

I think it's amazing that the PS2 can still be selling as much as it is and be as relevant as it is 10 years after launch. The only other systems to ever do that are the Gameboy and the PC.

good info

Keeping the PS2 alive for so long was a very good plan by sony.

People in developing countries really can't afford to buy this gens consoles but keeping the cheap PS2 on the market gives them a chance to get hold of a still pretty decent console.

Weekly, according to VGC, considerably more consoles are being sold in the EU than the US - unless EU include others - so to sate that the US will be no.1 through to 2013 is a bit puzzling - unless they are talking about individual countries.

Most of the people in "developing countries" are probably pirating rather than buying PS2 games though, which explains why PS2 software sales keep falling so precipitously in Sony financials.

If the hardware is profitable though, which PS2 is at least in the west, greatly so, game piracy doesnt hurt as much.

great job sony. now they have to do is drop the price pf the PS3
and kill off the PS2

VITA 32 GIG CARD.250 GIG SLIM & 160 GIG PHAT PS3

in sony's forecast ps2 is 7 million and psp is 10 million that is crazyy ps2 will never die

Its crazy seeing the Playstation 2 still selling hardware/software so well so many years after release. It was most definitely a good idea keeping the console on the market.

True, but the games will be far cheaper than a current-gen game so maybe that will help address the piracy but yeah, you are right.
