Taking equal timeframes, despite the PS3 missing the holiday season in PAL regions (1 year and 4 months headstart) and more so for other regions. And of course the much cheaper entry pricing for the XBox 360, the PS3 outsold the XBox 360 by 5.5 million units so far (end of 2009) taking equal measures.
The XBox 360 sold 28 million units by the end of 2008.
The PS3 sold 33.5 million units by the end of 2009.
For the PS3 to stay ahead it needs to sell 39 million units by the end of 2010. So another 5.5 million units, but it sold 6.5 million just last holiday season, so I think holiday season 2010 alone should be more than enough to cover this.
What do you think the gap will be by the end of 2010 taking equal timeframes? PS3 2010 total sales vs XBox 360 2009 total sales?
Personally I think the PS3 by then will have outsold the XBox 360 by over 10 million taking equal timeframes. Of course, Microsoft offered holiday 2008 deals as low as 119 Euros (including taxes, memory card and some games) in major parts of Europe for a couple of months, so they may be able to lower the entry pricing to only 99 Euro for 2010, which would then destroy my prediction if Sony does not act on this accordingly.
