Forums - Sales Discussion - Modern Warfare 2 trumps entire first party lineups

@ Sharky: Ha. Reminds me of when Kotic was threatening to stop supporting the PS3..The only difference being Kotic is an actual CEO of a company while the supposed statements coming from Capcom or Sega were people lower on the totem pole.

But either way this is generally not about the Wii as MW2 isn't on that platform is it? I'm simply pointing out Nintendo is no where near as dependent on TP's as their competitors are.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

Hence why the competition MUST parrot and fabricate this notion that Wii is inhospitable to third parties because if TP's ever left Sony/M$ for greener pastures those platforms would perish.

Not really, both have at least one mega series (GT and Halo) which would be capable of selling a lot of consoles all by itself, and both own a ton of high quality solid selling games that they could put on their system (especially sony).

I doubt one multimillion selling game such as a GT or Halo would be enough to really push either console out of the realm of GC numbers. And Sony's first party software besides the aforementioned hasn't shown to be all that impressive (#'s wise) Xbox first party is nonexistent. Which is my point third parties are largely responsible for those platforms success.

Which is a dangerous position to be in, in my opinion.

Multiple new ips, 4 of which became 3 million plus sellers (resistance, motorstorm, LBP, uncharted), more first party studios then anyone, and a ton of highly sought out and well respected IPs (GoW, socom, ratchet, team ico's stuff). Sony may not have huge guns like Mario and zelda (except for GT) but they have a dozen or so metroid level hits and a high critical reception. I think sony would be just fine with first party alone. Of course, better to have third parties than not.

Not really fair by Nintendo to remove the best selling HD title from the picture and then make comparisons.

It was also not fair to say that core games don't sell on the Wii and to prove it remove all Nintendo software. But it was still regularly done.

Anyway, what Nintendo wanted to show with the removal of MW2 is that the HD consoles are pretty similar to the Wii regarding software sales. Most of the sales go to a few big games while the majority of titles don't achieve anything special. This makes the argument that third parties have higher chances to succeed on the HD consoles look pretty silly.

Keep in mind that the higher the total number of games is, the harder it is to keep a high average sales figure per title. Makes the Wii's results even more impressive.

you silly little man, you dont move goalposts to favor Nintendo you move them to their dissadvantage.

I will forgive you this time but now you know that you did it wrong and you can do it right next time.

There's no worry about third parties leaving the HD consoles, if anything they are moving more toward HD consoles and further away from the Wii by recent comments of Sega, Ubisoft, Activision etc.

3rd party developers need the HD consoles as much as the HD consoles need them.

Nintendo has done FAR better financially than any other developer or HD console manufacturer by looking after their own house.

MW2 may trump the HD 1st party lineup but not the wii's big hitters.

It's great having the support that the HD consoles now have but if you really want to make major money in this industry you must totally be in charge of your biggest franchises and no one knows this better than Nintendo - especially after the Gamecube.

COD:MWs sell a whole lot but the major slice of that cash pie is not going to sony or ms, it's going to IW and activision - is it activision? Cant remember. The same with MS's biggest games.

I think it is more to do with the fact that 3rd party devs can get far better returns on HD games, mainly franchises.

Nintendo's biggest games are their own..... most of MS's and Sony's someone else's.
