Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Mario Galaxy inspired by hamster!

His passion for gardening inspired Pikmin, his love of dogs led him to create Nintendogs and now Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed his inspiration for Super Mario Galaxy - hamsters!

Speaking at the 13th Annual Japan Media Arts Festival, Miyamoto revealed that a hamster that he was looking after provided the inspiration for the best Wii game ever.

Working out where the Mario series was to go next, Miyamoto decided he wanted the plumber to be able to run freely like a hamster. So Galaxy was set on planets, enabling players to run around and return to the same point.

What will he reveal next? A gerbil influenced Donkey Kong?

Miyamoto is a genius.

Seriously, he's brilliant. And maybe also a bit insane.
Who else could've turned a hamster into a such a game?

Seriously, the man has a habit of taking boring, ordinary everyday things and turn them into gold.

Maybe it'd be a cool idea, as an experiment, for Iwata to just give him a random household object, like say a toothbrush, and demand he make a game based off it. XD

I'd love to see a game based on a toothbrush can you imagine how well that would work with the Wiimote.

SMG was inspired by Ratchet & Clank 2, everybody knows this.

Another issue I have with this article is the notion that SMG is the best Wii game ever. Not even close.

Grade A sarcasm. Especially the second line.

This man is clearly on some level genius which only the likes of Newton and co are on, like them he's inspired by unusual sources and has peculiar hobbies like measuring things and comes up with things that completely blow us away. I remember when Pikmin was announced and he told game sites it's an idea based on his love for gardening and everyone was like wtf.

This man is gaming god genius.
