What's your budget?

Depends on what you want. The Radeon 5870 is $100 more than the Radeon 5850 and the combo you listed gives you a $25 discount compared to buying the Radeon 5870 and i7 860 on their own.

Here's a link to Guru3d's review of the Radeon 5850. The page it's on is the first of the benchmarks. If you scroll down you can see a graph on each game benchmark page with the results of numerous graphics cards (including the 5870) at 1920x1200 resolution and 8xAA.

As for the power supply, I think that would be enough unless you planned on having dual GPU's.

Wow, for the price I'd be better off with the 5850 for sure.  Then If I need more power later, I can just buy a second and put it in Crossfire.  Thanks again man.

Galaki, my budget is around $1200.

Here's something to start with. I just sort of pulled out products with good reviews and such so I'm sure you or others can find other stuff that'll work as well. So consider this more of a starting point of researching prices.

Things like keyboard, mouse, and speakers aren't included as that all depends on what you want and/or have. For example, I use a Logitech G5 that I've had for a while, a 7 year old keyboard, and a used set of Logitech 5.1 speakers that I got for half the retail price at the time. Heck, I've also been using my DVD burner and DVD-Rom for years as well. Might want to include some thermal compound in there as well.

I'm going to try to copy and paste of the products I put into Newegg's cart. Taken from US Newegg site.

This is eesnetially the same as the $1500 system he linked to, but the $1500 includes keyboard and mouse,  an extra 4G of RAM and windows 7. The OP has a laptop so he'll need keyboard/mouse.

1279+50 (key.mouse) 104 (extra 4G) = 1433  +win7 (Free from school else $100)= ~1533.  Not much in savings here.

Plus this has tech support and an ooverall (not just individual components) warranty.  iBuyPower is a pretty good brand -I've bought them for friends before.

I would not recommend building  new PC from mail order parts if it's your first time. If you live near a TigerDirect or a Fry's go there and buy the parts there. The sales guy will make sure evrything is compatible, at the very least yuu can read the boxes, talk to other customers, etc.

My main PC died on Firday. It was 5+ years old. (P4 2.8/2G)  I drove to a nearby tiger direct and for <500 had a brand new PC (MB, CPU, RAM, HDD) up and running in a few hours. But I have done that many many times...

Trying to convince me the Wii is a real adult game machine 'if you play it right' is like trying to convince me Tofu tastes great 'if you just cook it right'

There's an epic thread on building your own PC in here somewhere.

And there's nothing that could really warrant buying a PC pre-built. So don't.

I'll go digging for that thread....

Well, the case seems like overkill and be aware that the HDD is a Green model. Although I agree you may want a CPU and maybe even

VGA cooler since the stock are usually loud and poor.

It is basically the same, but with extra processor cooling, faster memory (I'm not sure you'd need 8gb for gaming today), bigger harddrive, better PSU(?) and above all a better case for all of it. Though I wouldn't chose the Antec 1200... There are better cases out there for less money, if you are satisfied with a midi tower.

Thanks for the thread link, I'll peruse through it now.

I have put together a couple lists of parts on Newegg today, and so far the savings have been negligible, particularly since I would need to get an OS from my school for free in order for it to be cheaper at all.

I'll see if theres anything local around me that offers big savings, but I'm having my doubts.  Theres a company called NCIX that I thought might be decent, but they are considerably more than Newegg, so no such luck.

You're other option for the OS would to get the OEM version which are cheaper than the full versions, but it'd be like what you get from hardware vendors as in the OS is tied to the motherboard and if your motherboard fails and/or you replace it, that product key will be worthless.

The $1500 one you linked in your post also used 2 GTX 260's in SLI. Like I said, I just pulled together some things really quick.

It's a little better for somebody who already has certain things like an OS, keyboard, mouse, speakers, hard drives and DVD burner/rom than somebody who's starting from scratch.

@Killergran - Go for the fan overkill with Antec! :P
