Forums - Sony Discussion - How long will Blu ray last

I have started buying a lot more blu rays now( currently own 30 movies) but i have been wondering something. How long will sony continue to support blu ray? i read an article on cnet.com where they said ps4 will likely not have blu ray in it. Also sony always has something new in their consoles. Am i just wasting money on blu ray or do you think blu ray will last a long time?

I doubt they'd build somethin' up for this long and then drop it. The PS4 isn't going to downgrade back to DVD either.

Platinums/100% Completion: Super Stardust HD, Linger In Shadows, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Burnout Paradise, Shaun White Snowboarding, Tomb Raider: Underworld, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator: Salvation, Assassin's Creed II, WipEout HD, Ratchet And Clank: A Crack In Time, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, God Of War, God of War II, God of War III, inFamous.

Working on: GTA IV - 87%, Batman: Arkham Asylum - 80%.

for at least a month id expect

"They will know heghan belongs to the helghast"

"England expects that everyman will do his duty"

"we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender"

Probably a long time, though it'll probably share the distribution crown with flash based media players/storage and direct download/streaming.

Tease.

Longer then DVD, reason why? Peoples internet speeds are still too low for downloading content from the web. Digital Distribution still needs about 6 more years to come over physical distribution.

Blu Rays maximum delivery is something like 35Mbps. If you had a 50Mbps internet connection you could easily manage as good if not better than Blu Ray quality sound + video over the internet even accounting for less than advertised speeds. Most Cable/DSL companies are pushing for 100Mbps to the home. Realistically you could probably get away with 30Mbps internet as most consumers couldn't tell the difference between similar bit rate but well encoded content, or if they do they don't particularly care for the difference.

I think he means peoples downloads speeds, a lot of people don't have very good interenet speeds to download films,  mines is fine for it, but my brother who lives 2 miles down the road, he has really crap internet conection, sometimes when he is downlooading a demo off the PSN it says something stupid like 1 day remaining, where as mine is a matter o minutes. People all around need a decent internet base speed before digital distribution takes place.

Wow, where are these speeds available? I currently have 1Mbps and that was JUST upgraded! The fastest in my area is for regular residential use is 7. Average North American download speed is only at 7Mbps, so yeah, it's gonna be a little while before digital distribution goes mainstream.

Well, why does it matter? PS2 still read the CDs of it's predecessor, and PS3 still reads DVDs and Blu-ray... What's the issue? PS4 will likely read DVDs, Blu-Ray, and something else IF they decide to move away from it... But, I doubt that. They'll probably use 250 GB blu-ray discs for games, and probably have some kinda added support down the line if it's not too expensive... PS5 will probably read something different, but, by then, it wont matter. Blu-Ray will probably outlast the PS3, people aren't going to be so willing to throw out their perfectly good blu-ray players, when they can't notice a better sound quality and video quality...

You have to wait for things to break down, and wait for the masses of people to be ready to change. Don't base your PS disc readers based on past architectures. PS1, and PS2 used wired, slotted controllers and memory cards... however the PS3 doesn't. Just wait and see. CD wasn't enough for PS2, and DVD isn't enough for PS3. Blu-ray with a 250 GB disc may very well be, enough for PS4, and it probably would be cost effective, along with 2 CELLs, or whatever Sony's going to do... Just think... a PS4 with even 3 CELL BE.... awesome..

I'm pretty sure Sony is going to support Blu-Ray for a long time, its starting to gain momentum now, so I don't see why they'd stop supporting it anytime soon.
