I agree,

I want the ps3 to support the latest developments like hi res x264, aac, mkv, ssa videos.

If it would, it would do that without competition, next to the pc.

Just allowing Divx is a first step but no real deal, cause every dvd player nowadays is capable of playing divx/xvid.

btw:

WMV playback might never happen, even though the ps3 supports VC-1, a special version of WMV.

You're wrong, again ... !

DivX is no audio format, it's just a video codec and maybe an "unpopular" container format.

The "best audio format available" might be aac or my favorite, mp3 !

p.s.

Back in the days of divx 3.11, the codec included a "divx audio codec". It was, like

the divx 3.11 video codec, a hacked microsoft asf derivate and has nothing to do with the current company and product divx.

meh w/e all I know is 90% of all Anime Music Videos are encoded with Divx. And for formats I still perfer OGG =P

If so, YAY!

Any word on whether it'll work in the browser, I would love to be able to use Stage6 on my PS3.

I'll still have to convert them for my iPod, although when the 3G PSP Phone comes out, you'll be able to stream content from the PS3 to anyway, that would be truly awesome
