Forums - Sony Discussion - How much the PS3 loses and what they might profit

Due to the whiners, I will not present any analysis.

Mr Oneda said it expects to lower production costs of its PlayStation 3 videogame console by 15% in the coming fiscal year ending March 31, 2011, resulting in a benefit of "tens of billions" of yen for the business. Currently, Sony loses about six cents for every dollar of PS3 hardware sales.

PS3 sales rose 44% in its fiscal third quarter. Sales got a bump after Sony dropped the price by 25% to $299 in September for its model with an 80-gigabyte hard drive.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

So you think PS3 is sold to retailers for 299 USD? (Just pointing out the obvious flaw in your logic; PS3 certainly does not cost 316 USD to make.)

"Well certainly with the Xbox 360, we had some challenges at the launch. Once we identified that we took control of it. We wanted to do it right by our customers. Our customers are very important to us." -Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb (10/2013). Note: RRoD was fixed with the Jasper-revision 3 years after the launch of 360

"People don't pay attention to a lot of the details."-Yusuf Mehdi explaining why Xbone DRM scheme would succeed

"Fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity; it's called Xbox 360,”-Don Mattrick

"The region locking of the 3DS wasn't done for profits on games"-MDMAlliance

So the 250gb model is making profit then?

It might be a little less, but not by much. The margins on retail hardware sales is very tiny.

This is all pure speculation. We have no way of knowing how and when economies of scale will help make selling PS3 profitable. All we really know that the break even point is about to be reached.

Again, pure speculation. You have no idea which retailer pays how much.

Look, this is the closes thing we've gotten to real numbers since the system has been released. I'm sorry if that's not enough for you.

Well it seems you're trying to start a discussion about something know nothing about. There are no official numbers. How were expecting people to react?
