The article raises valid points about game hype. However, I disagree in regards to Mass Effect 2. I believe the game deserves the ratings it is getting, and the buzz. I would argue that it is in running for best RPG this generation (the series of games at least does). If what Mass Effect 2 is, isn't what one is into, they won't get into it. But I believe for others, it is really good. It has a greatly developed world, good voice acting, and provides players with good choices. It isn't perfect, but it deserves the praise it gets. Uncharted 2 deserved it, and so does Mass Effect 2.

Mass Effect 2 didn't get much buzz at all until close to release. It was more of a muted anticipation. Certainly not the kind of game to pop up them fanboy 'lists' for 3 years running. Quite frankly, Uncharted 2, God of War, Gran Turismo, Halo, Gears etc would be better targets for an article on how bad hype is.

You know why I think ME2 deserves the hype?
Its the first game to actually focus on continuity between the first game and the sequel. That is something no other game has done. If you didn't enjoy the story of ME1, you will absolutely get lost in the hype. So its certainly a curse and a blessing.

Mass Effect 2 definitely has some issues, but damn the game is immersive and awesome. Definitely deserves the ratings it is getting.
Err. . . I like that you can't build hype in Japan because the user base is more informed. Really!?!?
Nothing to see here really, except that he claims companies buy reviews, which has never been proven and would be considered libel if he mentioned specific sites/magazines. Mass Effect 2 is actually as good as the reveiws say, just like Uncharted 2 was, neither of them were overhyped.
I do agree that overhyping happens, and can hurt an experience (MGS4 for me) but this is just badly written (translated from ?) and uses carefully worded fanboy arguments.
Just like Halo3 is "The best FPS to ever grace the earth" type of hype?
Well, I think that ME and ME2 both are good games, not my style but good games nonetheless that deserve the hype they get.
There are so many other games that get oodles of hype and it is wholly undeserving. My example already given for that.
*but that is what I get for being a PC FPS gamer first and foremost, just better selection there*
