Forums - Gaming Discussion - What happened to JRPG genre on consoles?

I was wondering what the hell happened to JRPG this gen, back in the ps1 days JRPG's was one of the best genres I remember Xenogears, legend of dragoon, chrono cross and some other gr8 JRPG back then now look at what we have.....

Star Ocean 4

infinite undiscovery

Last remnant

White knight

Magnacarta 2

the highest rated JRPG so far is Eternal sonata on ps3 which is 80, the rest are below it

TOV

Lost odessy

and soon Last rebellion

Has JRPG's always been hammered in reviews or JRPG's are just getting sloppy now? I know there's some rpg's on that list that ppl seem to like despite not having a stellar scores but thats what confuses do reviewers just love giving JRPG's low scores?

things change. look at platformers for example. they had their moment and now something else is popular. besides, maybe it's time to bring some innovation to the genre which could bring more prestige back to those kind of games

Other than a few exceptions here and there this generation has been very poor compared to previous gens when it comes to JRPGs. Some of these games though have also been under scored in my opinion. One example is Vesperia. It is much better than the mid-high 70's meta it has.

Valkyria Chronicles is also a JRPG, well a SJRPG to be exact and it has a meta of 86. Disgaea 3 also has a meta of 78 and that is with the pre-PS2 level graphics. Sot not all of them have been poor.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

^^ thats true, I feel that they shud introduce some fresh new ideas on JRPG's the genre could still be revive.

the same thing i was thinking the other day.there were so many games on the PS1,so many great jrpgs.

when i searching for jrpgs on google a few days ago,the PS1 list didn't stop.there were so many and most were AAA's

Just to remind you. Among recent jRPGs there are Mario & Luigi RPG 3, SMT: Persona 4 and on top of that Demon's Souls (if you choose to count this as jRPG) - all got 90+ average scores if I'm not mistaken.

@mai

For some reason ppl dont see Demon souls as a JRPG and it doesn't play like one, and Im pretty sure Demon souls isn't 90+ just missed it by 1 point now Im not sure about the others you mentioned.

Mario & Luigi RPG 3 is for DS and Persona 4 is PS2 title.
Anyway, there are quite a lot of them releasing this year (and possibly next), so its fine for me.
FF XIII, WKC, Atelier Rorona, Ar Tonelico III, 3D Dot Game Heroes, Last Rebellion, Resonance of Fate and couple more.

"And yet, I've realized that maybe living a "decent" life means you won't ever have a "good" life."

JRPG is my favourite genre EVER. And, current gen ones aren't that bad at all.
Star Ocean 4 was pretty good, goin' to play it again on PS3
Lost Odyssey and Infinite Undiscovery were pretty good too.
Valkyria Chronicles was beautiful and, now I have high expectacion from White Knight Chronicle..

but yes, their not as good as they used too..

maybe its just me but, i think they don't need innovation, rather they need to turn back a little and be more classic, more japanese.

Things like: turn based combat, pre render background, lot of side quest, deep story, random encounter.. are things that a JRPG needs.. and developers should try to found a way to implement that with new technology

But, overall I have some hopes for the future. On the PS2 the best rpgs found they're way on the latter part of the console life cicle, and probably will be the same with PS3. (don't know about 360.. if they can't sell more in Japan then most title will be PS3 exclusive.. like Ar tonelico, Last Rebellion, Atelier Roronoa)

It's pretty obvious "what happened." Here, I'll show you:

Yeah. It's as simple as that. Due to limited suppliers / demand, Japan will come out with only so many RPG's in a given period of time. Many of them have been going to handhelds.

Well, another major reason is how JRPG's on consoles (especially HD) require much higher development costs / time than they ever did before. This is because in theory people believe stuff like 2D is only acceptable on the DS, and they will only accept great 3D graphics for their games.
