Forums - Sales Discussion - Look at Those Legs Game of the Day (10/3) - Assassin's Creed

Thread Description: In this series of threads I will be looking at games that have been released for at least 18 months, and then comparing how much first week, and first month sales make up of the total sales. In the second post there will be one of two polls, one for a game with strong legs (1st month sales make up less than 35% of total sales) and one for why a game was more frontloaded (1st month sales make up more than 35% of total sales) .  With the thread description out the way here is today's  Look at those Legs Game of the Day…

Game of the Day

Article to be posted on 10/3

Assassin's Creed

# of Copies Sold % of Total Sales
First Week Sales 1.77 22.09
First Month Sales 2.91 36.38

Description: Assassin's Creed launched in November of 2007 and has since become the most successful new multiplatform franchise this generation, selling a total of 8 million copies. However; a large portion of the game's sales (~36%) came in it's first month of release. Considering the game was a start to a new franchise, and didn't have an existing fanbase it is very surprising the game didn't continue to see sustained sells for longer. Is it because people who bought the game didn't enjoy it and therefore the word of mouth was negative? If so Ubisoft will probably be pretty nervous how the soon to be released sequel will perform.  But poor word of mouth is not the only possible explanation for the frontloaded sells.  So vote in the poll in the second post, and then let us know what you think the reason is.

Side Note: You might have seen in the "Help Our Site Articles" thread, but I'm trying to find a group of people with N4G accounts that would be willing to consistently vote to approve VGChartz articles and I would send out a pm to everybody when an article needs to be approved.  Getting approved and a high rating on that site really helps the number of views articles get, so anybody willing to help would be much appreciated. If you are interested send me a pm.

Poll closed now that the article is posted.  Thanks to the people who voted/commented in this thread!

This thread is off to a slow start. Does nobody have an opinion/comment about Assassin's Creed?

AC was a game I was pretty interested in before release, but I seem to remember there being a lot of other games released at the same time that were of high quality. I ended up not getting it because of reviews...not just the somewhat average reviews, but more the fact that it sounded like a game that you do the same thing 9 times over again. I was tempted when it dropped in price rather quickly, but still have not purchased.

Assassin's Creed was released in November, so during the busy holiday season. Just from reading peoples comments about the game, it seems like a lot of people shared the concern about repetition and little replay value.

Hmm... I hate to just be talking to myself, but I really need some more comments and a lot more votes for the article tomorrow. Are people just not interested in Assassin's Creed, or do I need to do something to reignite interest in these threads?

I hate to keep bumping my own thread but the lack of participation in this thread is confusing/alarming, I can't write an article with so little participation in the thread. Currently I only have 11 votes in the poll, whereas the threads earlier in the week were all getting 100+.

I think Assassin's Creeds sales are pretty interesting. It is uncommon for a new IP to be so front loaded as it it has not yet established a fan base. Yet because the initial sells were so huge, the total sales for the game are still extremely good. So what do people think, why was the game so front loaded?

OK, I'm trying one more time. Please people, I was planning on writing the article in a few hours, but to do that I need more votes anc comments. So please help me out (even if you are not that interested in this thread) by voting and leaving a comment. I always include the best user comments in the articles, so with only 1 other comment so far, you have a good chance of being included.

Here is a specific question to answer so it is easier to know what to talk about. - How much do you think used copies of Assassin's Creed hurt the games sells after release?

I voted. I think the game had a lot of hype, and a big first week. I don't think it necessarily had short legs or was frontloaded, so much as it captured a big chunk of its audience in its first week. I think a lot of people outside the internet liked this game.

I got it pre-owned 2 months after it released myself, I wonder if others did too
