Forums - Sales Discussion - Look at those Legs Game of the Day (9/25) - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Note: You might have seen them, but if not the Game of the Day threads are now getting follow up articles, a big part of the articles is user input from the thread, so please give your thoughts with both your vote and comments.  I’ll pick what I think are the best 3 reasoned arguments and put them in the article giving credit to the author and linking to their profile.  So if you like to get profile views this would be a good way for you get some more.

Thread Description: In this series of threads I will be looking at games that have been released for at least 18 months, and then comparing how much first week, and first month sales make up of the total sales. In the second post there will be one of two polls, one for a game with strong legs (1st month sales make up less than 35% of total sales) and one for why a game was more frontloaded (1st month sales make up more than 35% of total sales) .  With the thread description out the way here is today's  Look at those Legs Game of the Day…

Description: Today’s Look at those Legs Game of the Day is the 2007 Playstation 3 title; Uncharted: Drakes Fortune. The game opened up relatively quietly with worldwide first week sales at 133,000.  However; the game went on to become one of the systems premier titles and has now racked up a cumulative 2.56 million sales with just weeks to go before the sequel releases. So what allowed the game to become a hit despite a modest opening?  Was it the bundles with the system, positive word out mouth?  Or was it something else?  Vote in the poll in the second post and then leave a comment letting us know what you think.

Update: Poll taken down now that the article has been posted. Thanks to everyone who participated in this thread!

I'm going to say this before we get too far.

The game was only bundled until real late with 160GB in North America. Now go!

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

It was all because of bundles.

It was bundles in every unit.

And here I was expecting to see Nathan Drake's legs...... but no, I end up with sales :P

I'm curious to see how this game will perform especially if they actually do stuff like market it. I didn't remember seeing any Uncharted or Ratchet and Clank Future commercials till like a month or two after the game even came out which is a shame because they were good commercials.

At E3 Sony said they've sold more than 2.6m, and i remember a while back it was over 2.6m but it eventually got adjusted down.

Gaming on: PS4 Pro, Switch, SNES Mini, Wii U, PC (i5-7400, GTX 1060)

none of the reasons you listed are relevant.

My poll answer is a combination of answers (1,4,5,6,7) + it was well reviewed

One thing you missed to just say in the poll was that it was a great game, and it truly was. I'm sure the 160 GB console helped with the sales a bit but it was and still is one one of the best third-person shooters that the PS3 has to offer. People realized this and I'm sure they knew they had to buy it, as I did. Also, alot of people said it was cross between Tomb Raider and Gears of War and I'm sure fans of those franchises that had a PS3 picked it up because of these comparisons. Finally, I'm sure the graphics whores picked it up as well.

Word of mouth.

Literally everyone at my school who had a PS3 said that they'd got Uncharted on a friend's recommendation.

Lack of other great titles at the time played a part though - I definitely think more people took a punt because there wasn't much else great to choose.
