Forums - Sales Discussion - Sony confirms internal depletion 60 GB PS3 supply, 80 gig price drop?

Sony elaborated on previous comments made about 60GB PS3 inventory stock on Wednesday, confirming that only retail supply of the $499 machine remains and suggesting that the expected 80GB price drop is imminent. "We no longer have any inventory in SCEA warehouses. All inventory has been purchased and shipped to retailers," Sony's Dave Karraker said in an email. "We don't have visibility as to if that is on their store shelves or in their warehouses at this time. However, based on inventory reports from our retailers, there is ample supply still left in the channel." On Tuesday, it was revealed that Sony's online inventory had been fully depleted. In July, after slashing the PS3 price by $100, the company said that the now discontinued 60GB PS3 would be available for several months. At that point, Sony alluded that they may also reduce the price of the $599 80GB PS3 to $499 as many analyst expect. "We won't be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated," the company said at the time. UPDATE: According to Sony, SonyStyle.com is shifting inventory from its retail stores to the site to meet web demand.
http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=131768 I've been expecting Sony to drop the price of the 80 gig when 60 gig is totally gone. Probably around Thanksgiving, we'll see $399 40 gig minimum edition.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

I'm sure we'll see an 80gig price drop when we see the 100gig released. As for the 40gig at $399 new I doubt it.

40gb makes no sense. The cost differential between a 40gb and 80gb is almost nothing. The 40gb drive may in fact cost more at the OEM level because it's produced in fewer quantities.

If they took out the wi-fi and mem card slots it would be less. I'm just going by the rumors that the guy at M$ said.

Actually, I do have a 360 as well, but that's besides the point. I got used to typing it that way. I at one time hated MS with a passion during the Windows Me era.

i knew they still had tons left. They're not gonna drop the price when there is still 60 gigs on the shelf, and as i've said before it won't be anytime soon.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

their won't be an 80GB price drop till at least spring 08

Common sense says that's what they'll do, but when did they ever "allude" to anything like that? Doesn't sound like something they'd say at all, although it might have quelled some of the "clearance sale" hysterics on boards like these.

+1 for western,

- price drop when 60gb is depleted
the 80gb will be sold at 500$
(if they dont do this, it means the minimum price will increase from 500 to 600$ that will be a bad move considering the current sales in NA)

-no 40gb model

- we can imagine that near the total depletion of the 60gb model, Sony will put the 80gb model at 500$ AND make some sort of promotion to TOTALY sold out the few 60g sku still on the shielves. Maybe the 60gb model will be sold at
450$ - 400$.
