Forums - Sales Discussion - Naughty Dog Co-founder, Console prices 'Out of Hand' except Nintendo

@Fishyjoe: Average Wii game in Finland is 50-60 EUR (others even higher), which i believe is around 65-80 USD.
The most expensive games in Finland have been SNES games, their prices were between 650-800 FIM (110-135 EUR [1 EUR=5,94573 FIM]).

Ei Kiinasti.

Games are only 40 pounds. Thats $80 american dollars.

Only??? Cripes, I'd give up gaming if that was the average price per game.

Yeah, I don't think you can really call yourself a hardcore gamer until you pay those kinds of prices =P I understand why they need to charge a bit more for certain regions but that seems more like price gouging tbh.

Is this a government tax thing? Import tax? There has to be something behind it.

Currency variations explains some of it.  5 years ago that 40 pound game would have been $57 and 14 years ago $72.  At the moment non US games are going to look somewhat expensive in dollar terms.

A VAT that ranges from 15-25% in Europe also hurts a lot.  I imagine stores are further hit with higher taxes and fees (well I know they are I just don't know what specifically) that get passed along as well as higher transportation costs, currency hedging, and the general effect of smaller more fractured markets.  Add it all together and $50-60 can easily become $80.  To be fair though with the sales tax in the US the price isn't $50 but $50-55 and $60-66 depending on the state and city.
