Well, the PS3 does a lot more than the 360. if you want what the PS3 does, then it's totally worth it. If you just want to play games, then the 360 might be a better option.

The PS3 is more expensive than the 360, but if you want any single feature that the PS3 has, the total will cost more than the difference between the PS3 and the 360 if you want it (hard disk upgrade, wireless internet, HD-DVD drive, etc.)

If you don't have a HD set, or have one under 40", you might look into getting a Wii. If you have a larger set, the Wii graphics will be pretty disappointing (I know I'm going to get complaints about this one. Yes, I have a Wii. Yes, I have the component cables. I also watch SD channels, but it doesn't mean they don't look pretty lame compared to the HD channels.)

@senatorpjt

Haven't heard from you in a while. I have a 32" SDTV no component cables.

On Topic: I will say this, as far as TV's for the PS3. 1080p on anything less than a 40" TV looks almost like 720p. From what I have heard, 1080p is the way to go. It seems that BR movies do not downscale to 720p. If you don't have 1080p, they drop down to 480p by default. Not sure about games, though.

My 2 cents.

Good:

IMO, the best lineup this Christmas (ckmlb made a good thread about this http://vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=5141 )
No serious hardware problems whatsoever so far.
Sony is a powerhouse first-party publisher.
Plays BR's.
Greater "potential" (in the form of more disc space and potentially more processing power).
PSN is free and is pretty good.
Home.
MGS4 and FFXIII.
Customizable backgrounds (this is WAY coo cause they post good ones on the PSN. I don't know if the 360 can do this).
DVR in its future.
Firmware updates are often very rewarding with new features.

There are more, but that should be enough.

Bad:

Price (although certainly better than it used to be).
PSN reliability (it is good, but not as good as XBL, but then again it is free).
No rumble (not a big deal to me, but some people really care).
"Tacked-on" motion-sensing (once again, not a big deal to me, but it is for some people. The problem should get better, not worse).
Slow with downloadable PS1 game updates (this one pisses me off possibly the most, they haven't added many since launch, only Castlevania: SOTN. But at least you can play them without a PSP now).
Losing some exclusives.
Games can often be delayed (both good and bad depending on how you look at it).
Difficult to program for (Sony seems to be helping in this area by sending people to work on the Unreal 3 Engine and updating dev kits).
Not as PC-crossover friendly as the 360.
Not as casual friendly as the Wii.
Worse backward compatibility in the new model.
Japanese PSN store gets preferential treatment (also pisses me off, but you can make a Japanese account and get the free stuff easily, so it could be worse).

Hopefully some of these will help with your decision. On the whole I really like the PS3, especially given the game lineup this Christmas. Once again, ckmlb had a great thread about this.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Speaking of which. I have a 61" DLP, and when playing the Wii, people (especially drunk people) still seem to feel the need to stand two feet away from the screen while swinging around the (very heavy) Wiimote in Bowling. I've had to put tape on the floor and tell people "DO NOT GO IN FRONT OF THE LINE"

@akuma: The new PS3 is backward compatible. It's just not 100% like with the "integrated" PS2 in the older versions.

Sony recently changed the problem with downscaling Blu-Ray movies to 480p rather than 720p in a firmware update.  It is no longer a problem.  I think there are still problems with using 1080i in games natively rendered at 720p though.

Review:PS3

Games: The only titles available that are worth your time are resistance:fall of man, and motorstorm.Although later on this month warhawk will be released, and this is the time you need to have a ps3.

High definition: Blu-ray players dont usually cost $499.99 and all your ps2 games and dvd's can be upgraded to full 1080p quality with the use of hdmi.

No hd tv? Not a problem I have an sd tv and the graphics still look pretty good.

Controller: Although not as innovative as the wii's, it is more innovative than the 360's controller.

Network: Its the best one out yet in terms of online play, xbox live right now is better than the psn but home may change that soon.

Worth 500buks?

Why do you think I bought it for 600buks?

My review, Its perfect!

PS3 is the Veyron the Sr71 the Michel Jordan the Tiger Woods the Gretzky the Jessica Alba of home consoles. If you need convincing you don't deserve it.

Its like breathing air there is no choice, there only is the PS3!
