Your sig is wrong. MS does not need (at least desperatly) to cut price. Sony absolutely does, as they are truly desperate and must stimulate sales.

Really if you consider the high tech consoles to be in their own war regardless of Wii as I do, 360 is sitting pretty with time on it's side. The choice between 360 and PS3 is all MS needs to worry about, and that choice will always go overwhelmingly 360 with prices (and game support) as they currently stand.

Therefore if they want to milk profits MS doesn't really need to cut. They will wait for Sony to make the first move, then cut.

BTW, the idea that there is some connection between this Blu_Ray player and a PS3 price cut is stupid. First, there's no law that says PS3 must be cheaper than any Blu_Ray player, and second, for an extra $100 you get a powerful games machine with PS3, which still gives it plenty of value over that 499 Blu_Ray player. In fact, games players are bought for games, so there's really little relation at all between PS3 sales and Blu_Ray player sales, or there wont be in the long run.

Actually one of the main draws of the PS3 was "Its a really cheap Bluray Player!"

And now its not a cheap Blu-Ray player anymore... hmm...

Sony has already gone on record saying that they have absolutely no intentions of cutting the price anytime soon.  The PS3 is not going to get a price cut anytime soon and don't expect them to tell you or even hint about until weeks before it happens.

The reason one will not happen anytime soon is simply because there aren't enough games yet.  There absolutely must be a well established library before they can even think about cutting the price.  They're already losing money on the PS3 and if they plan to lose more with each purchase, they better be sure that there are games to go along with that purchase.

True, one reason to buy the PS3 was as a "cheap" Blu_Ray player.

But to be honest, consoles suck as movie players, for lots of reasons. Real movie afficienados will always go for the stand alone player. After all, why put up with the size, heat, noise, buying an extra remote, etc of PS3 if you only care about playing movies on it?

It's like, who cares that PS2 plays DVD's now? Nobody. Same will eventually be true of PS3 and Blu_Ray.

I guess yeah, a temporary selling point of PS3 is theoretically gone now (I say theorertically because I'm not sure this player is truly going to be $499, AFAIK it's not confiormed, and notice you cannot buy it anywhere yet).

But I guess I'm just saying, the logic here is still kinda stupid. For $100 more you get a lot over that stand-alone player. If you care..

Don't forget that the supposedly system-mover PS3 games * are coming out next year, so the 360 should gain as much ground as possible before that time arrives. Especially considering that the PS3 may get a price cut at that time.

* as rocketpig said, "the holy trifecta of FF, MGS, and GT."

actually my 1st and always primary DVD player was my PS2. it was always already there for me to use. as for the price cut Sony will not undersell themselves, that's just stupid. PS3 will at least match, think of looking at the two and comparing options, h/d only would push it for movie buyers.
