PS5 Ships 97.9 Million Units as of September 2026

Sony Interactive Entertainment in its financial results announced it has shipped 97.9 million PlayStation 5 consoles as of September 30, 2026.

With 97.9 million PlayStation 5 consoles shipped that means 2.6 million units were shipped from July to September. This is down 1.4 million (-35%) from the same quarter last year when 4.0 million units were shipped.

For reference, the PlayStation 4 had shipped 2.8 million units in the same quarter for a lifetime total of 103.0 million units shipped as of September 30, 2019. This puts the PS5 behind shipped PS4 units by 5.1 million units.

There were a total of 88.2 million games sold on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 for the quarter. This is up 7.9 million (10%) from 80.3 million during the same period a year earlier. Digital sales accounted for XX percent of software sales.

There were 8.2 million first-party games sold across the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. This is up 1.9 million from 6.3 million a year ago.

There were 127 million monthly active users on the PlayStation Network, an increase of eight million from 119 million a year ago.

Sony's Game & Network Services Segment for the quarter ending September 30, 2026, reported revenue increased 95.3 billion yen ($0.60 million) year-over-year to 1,208.5 billion yen ($7.65 billion), while operating income increased 99.7 billion yen ($0.63 billion) to 220.1 billion yen ($1.39 billion).

Around the Network

Another strong quarter for Sony.

PS5 sales are better than I expected post price hike. It's also another non holiday quarter where Sony has made over 1B+ in profits. First party unit sales and MAU are up YoY, but Wolverine sales are a little disappointing at 2.4M sold as of November 4th.

Great tracking, VGChartz. If they hit their operating income target, they would beat Nintendo's all-time peak in yen (700 billion yen vs 640b~).

Now that most live service failures and the Bungie acquisition bleeding are behind them, their short/medium term is looking bright (or bleak for us disc wanters). But long term (3+ years) is anyone's guess.

Notice how hardware and "others" (including Sony software sales on PC, Xbox, Switch) revenue being down didn't stop their operating income from climbing 83%. Granted that jump is largely due to the Bungie blunder no longer being a factor.

It's kind of insane how much healthier and stronger PS5 era Sony is compared to PS4's despite how messed up things have been all gen. It shows how silly it is to be hyperfocused on hardware sales which depict PS4 era Sony as the winner. Their crossgen approach and long PS5 longevity should sustain high popularity no matter how expensive the PS6 is. But perhaps one day all the internet complaints and negative PR will materialize.
