Switch 2 vs Switch 1 Sales Comparison in Japan - August 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch 1.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

Switch 2 Vs. Switch 1 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 128,348 - Switch 2

Total Lead: 1,050,054 - Switch 2

Switch 2 Total Sales: 1,951,396

Switch 1 Total Sales: 901,342

August 2025 is the 3rd month that the Nintendo Switch 2 has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch 2 has outsold the Switch 1 by 0.13 million units when you align the launches. The Switch 2 is now ahead of the Switch 1 by 1.05 million units.

The 3rd month for the Switch 2 is August 2025, while for the Switch 1 it is May 2017. The Switch 2 has sold 1.95 million units, while the Switch 1 sold 0.90 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo Switch 1 sold 36.00 million units to date. The Switch 2 is currently 34.05 million units behind the lifetime sales of the Switch 1.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Japan - August 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 49,641 - PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: 728,419 - PS4

Total Lead: 442,765 - PS4

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 6,980,574

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 7,423,339

August 2025 is the 58th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 0.05 million units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 0.73 million units. The PS5 is currently behind the PS4 by 0.44 million units.

The 58th month for the PS5 in Japan is August 2025, while for the PS4 it is November 2018. The PS5 has sold 6.98 million units, while the PS4 sold 7.42 million units during the same timeframe.

The PS4 crossed 8 million in month 61, 8.5 million in month 68, and 9 million in month 72. The PS4 sold 9.68 million units lifetime. The PS5 is currently 2.70 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4 in Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned Europe sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch 1.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 in Europe and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

Switch 2 Vs. Switch 1 Europe:

Total Lead: 752,241 - Switch 2

August 2025 is the 3rd month that the Nintendo Switch 2 has been available for in Europe. During the latest month, the Switch 2 has outsold the Switch 1 by 0.08 million units when you align the launches. The Switch 2 is now ahead of the Switch 1 by 0.75 million units.

The 3rd month for the Switch 2 is August 2025, while for the Switch 1 it is May 2017. The Switch 2 has sold 1.77 million units, while the Switch 1 sold 1.02 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo Switch 1 sold 39.11 million units to date. The Switch 2 is currently 37.34 million units behind the lifetime sales of the Switch 1.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in the US - August 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 US:

Gap change over last 12 months: 209,888 - PS4

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 26,607,336

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 25,272,759

August 2025 is the 58th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 22,653 units units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 0.21 million units. The PS5 is currently ahead of the PS4 by 1.33 million units.

The PS5 has sold 26.6 million units in 58 months, while the PS4 sold 25.27 million units. Month 58 for the PS5 is August 2025 and for the PS4 is August 2018.

The PS4 crossed 27 million in month 61 and 30 million in month 71. The PS4 sold 34.93 million units lifetime in the US. The PS5 is 8.32 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales in the US.

The 3rd month for the Switch 2 is August 2025, while for the Switch 1 it is May 2017. The Switch 2 has sold 2.39 million units, while the Switch 1 sold 1.36 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo Switch 1 sold 48.32 million units to date. The Switch 2 is currently 44.93 million units behind the lifetime sales of the Switch 1.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and Wii.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the Nintendo Wii launched in November 2006. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

In the last 12 months, the PlayStation 5 has outsold the Nintendo Wii by 3.00 million units. The Nintendo Wii is ahead of the PlayStation 5 by 8.22 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 79.09 million units in 58 months, while the Nintendo Wii sold 87.32 million units. Month 58 for the PlayStation 5 is August 2025 and for the Nintendo Wii it is August 2011.

The Nintendo Wii crossed 90 million units sold worldwide in month 61 and 100 million in month 85. The Nintendo Wii sold 101.63 million units lifetime. The PS5 is 22.54 million units behind lifetime Wii sales.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 3.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006 in North America and Japan and in March 2007 in Europe. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

August 2025 is the 58th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 3 by 70,671 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has grown its lead over the PS3 by 3.82 million units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 25.47 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 79.09 million units in 58 months, while the PlayStation 3 sold 53.62 million units. Month 58 for the PlayStation 5 is August 2025 and for the PlayStation 3 is August 2011.

The PlayStation 3 did not reach current PlayStation 5 sales until month 84 when it had sold 79.21 million units.

The PlayStation 3 crossed 60 million in month 62, 70 million in month 73, and 80 million in month 85. The PlayStation 3 sold 87.4 million units lifetime. The PS5 is 8.31 million units behind lifetime PS3 sales.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox One Sales Comparison - August 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in November 2020, while the Xbox One launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

August 2025 is the 58th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox One when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 0.52 million units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox One has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 5.53 million units. The Xbox Series X|S is currently behind the Xbox One by 8.50 million units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 33.53 million units in 58 months, while the Xbox One sold 42.04 million units. Month 58 for the Xbox Series X|S is August 2025 and for the Xbox One is August 2018.

The Xbox One crossed 45 million in month 62, 50 million in month 71, and 55 million in month 77. The Xbox One has sold 57.96 million units lifetime. The Xbox Series X|S is 24.44 million units behind lifetime Xbox One sales.

btw I know at this point there is zero chance the Xbox Series X|S will come close to the Xbox One, but it is the last dedicated Xbox comparison at this point.
