Forums - Gaming Discussion - AMAZING FACT: GoldenEye 007 Multiplayer Took Just Six Weeks To Make

Tagged games:

Don't get me wrong. I was just looking for recent news about the GoldenEye 007 because I said in the bananaKING's thread that it is the best game I played in Nintendo 64... so I found that EPIC interview dated March, 2013.

Rare staffers put it together right at the end

In 1997, Rare released GoldenEye 007 on the N64 and it became an absolute classic that arguably redefined the first person shooter genre and revolutionised the way multiplayer was done on home consoles.

It all nearly never happened though as according to Grant Kirkhope, the composer behind the game's excellent music, Nintendo "cancelled" the project for three months as it didn't think it was up to standard.

Speaking on the YouTube series Game Grumps, Kirkhope said Nintendo stopped funding the project, but Rare kept on going regardless. It paid the staff and didn't tell them of the cancellation until the end of production. Thankfully it did get finished and was released for us all to enjoy.

The game's multiplayer also nearly didn't happen either and was made in just six short weeks. As Kirkhope explained:

The multiplayer was put in literally in the last six weeks, it was right at the very very end and no one wanted it. Rare didn’t want it, but the team got it going and put it in the game at the end and said "look, it is good! Look at this!"

But no one wanted it when they suggested it, they said it was a stupid idea.

Obviously GoldenEye 007 was a huge success and Rare was asked if it would make a game for the next Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies. However, the studio decided against it in order to pursue other projects. It seems money may have been a reason for turning it down as well, as Kirkhope explained:

Even though it’s a great licence all the money goes to Eon [Productions] who own everything Bond.

So there you have it, it turns out we were pretty lucky to get to play GoldenEye 007 as it was nearly resigned to the scrap-heap. The Grant Kirkhope special of Game Grumps is up on YouTube now, but be warned, it contains a lot of bad language throughout.

Pretty sure this was posted before... I know I remember discussing it and thinking it was pretty awesome that they kinda just did it as its easily one of the best parts about the game. Sure the solo would have still been great, but this added so much life to the game and really made console FPS a true option.

yeah and to be honest, i don't really wonder that it didn't take longer but it was my favourite multiplayer game for years and played it hundred of hours with some friends.

hard to think about it nowadys how we could play games with 4 player splitscreen on a tv screen as big as an ipad screen or something lol.

This is my third dedication for a game in the latest weeks.... Halo 2 and Grandia are the others.

I wish I could have played the game. I only played it for an hour when I was 5 but then my mom saw me playing it, she took away from me cause she thought there was too much blood in it. To be honest, it was kinda scary playing the game at that age but I've always wanted to play the game fully.

That game was a blast, especially multilayer.  I'm not sure that I would say it was my favorite N64 game, but it was one of them...Super Mario 64, would be my fav, then Mario Kart 64, Banjo Kazooie, Conker (prob my 2nd fav), Donkey Kong 64, Doom 64, F-Zero X, Kirby 64, Zelda MM & OOT, Super Smash Bros., Yoshi's Story etc....  There were a lot of great games for the system....anyone who doesn't think that the Wii U will have great games hasn't been buying games for as long as I have.

Time to bust the N64 out :)

Stop hating and start playing.

Well the N64 have the best library for a Nintendo console I ever played... Wii not came close to that... SNES had a amazing library too.
