Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Next Mass Effect Is Is Being Made on The Battlefield 3 Graphics Engine ( new team making it )

BioWare Montreal will be heading up the development on the next Mass Effect game and they'll be using the Frostbite 2 engine to build it.

The epicenter for the hit sci-fi series has generally been done out of BioWare's Edmonton homebase. But a new post on the BioWare blog reveals that the three-year-old BioWare Montreal studio will be where the next chapter of Mass Effect is conceived:

… BioWare has always believed that the company culture is one of the key ingredients of the games we make, we took two important steps with the team. First, we deliberately seeded the new studio with many transfers from Edmonton. Second, we chose to grow the team relatively slowly, allowing new people to join the team and integrate into its culture in due time. Even with that approach, though, the Montreal studio has made significant contributions to the Mass Effect franchise. We started by building about half the cinematics for ME2, then most of its N7 missions, and finally we played an important role in the development of much of its post-release content. Then on ME3, we took charge of the multiplayer portion as well as making significant contributions to the single-player campaign. Most recently, we built a large piece of DLC that will be released on November 27 and that you know under the name of Omega.

Studio Director Yanick Roy says that Executive Director Casey Hudson will still be overseeing the franchise. In addition to divulging that the game's engine will be Frostbite 2—used in Battlefield 3, Need for Speed: The Run and the upcoming Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel—Roy's letter also says that the team will be intergrating systems created by the Dragon Age III team. After Hudson solicited fan input last week, Roy's comments makes it even more clear that things will be changing:

The other thing I can tell you is that, while it will be very respectful of the heritage built over the course of the first three games, with the original trilogy now concluded and the switch over to a new engine, we are exploring new directions, both on the gameplay and story fronts. You can still expect the pillars the franchise is known for to be fully intact though, including diverse alien races, a huge galaxy to explore, and of course rich, cinematic storytelling.

Do you guys think this is good, to me this is great news because we now have 3 team in bioware making rpg´s and casey hudson team propably will be making a new IP :D

This fits your meme. It is more exciting to know that Bioware is looking to rapidly expand the Mass Effect universe rather quickly. I can go with a new protagonist other than John Shepard.

If it is not about an exclusive it gets little attention. I am hyped.

I'm just a little worried that its going to be a Multiplayer focused game or MMO based on the fact that its being led by the multiplayer team. I know my interpretation of that small detail is probably too literal but still... The Mass Effect Universe could quite easily lend itself to MMO, but I just want my dedicated multiplayer experience with an amazing story, characters and graphics.

Also the fact that the title is using many of the modifications from Dragon Age 3 make me think that maybe, Dragon age 3 will be a 720 launch title?

Hopefully we'll see the ME4 late 2014/early 2015.

Anything is better than UE3...

I bet that becaue EA already knows that the self-sabotage they did on ME3 on Wii U will cause that version to not sell so they already made the order of not making a ME4 Wii U version.

They are turning it into a FPS......

I really really think so.

no fps or mmo guys, they already said they will be making a rpg

Lets hope it doesn't freeze our systems like BF3.

In regards to the 3 teams Bioware now have, I'm now trying to decide what I want more; a new IP or KOTR3...

PC and PS4 are the important Platforms here.
Battlefield 3 did perform a lot better on the PS3 than on the 360 and this won't change.

But im glad they use their own Engine now cause maybe Next Gen we won't see 123892763 games that look 1:1 the same aka Unreal Engine Oil Tear festival.
Worst Engine ever but sadly so easy to use and of course damn cheap to license.Unreal Engine 4 won't hopefully be that overused next Gen cause it looks like a lot of other much BETTER looking Engines are in development or are already out like the CE3 or the FB2 Engine.
