Gran Turismo 5 and Toyota Collaborate for Real Life Data Logging: Watch the Results

Two years ago Polyphony Digital and Toyota Motor Corporation announced a new technology that would allow data from a real car driven on a real course to be logged and visualized in Gran Turismo 5 for testing and display purposes.

The system exports CAN (Controlled Area Network) and GPS data recorded in a real car to a USB memory stick and feeds it to Gran Turismo 5′s simulation engine, producing a replay or recreation of that data within the game.

The data can be used as a ghost car, or used to analyze the real-life performance of a driver or a car on the race track.

CAN data includes things like forward/aft and right/left G forces, steering, brake, accelerator operations and engine rpm, as well as the rotational speeds of each wheel. When combined with GPS positional data, a very accurate recreation of the recorded drive is possible.

Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? Now you can actually see it in action past the cut in a recording from the Japanese TV, as the engineers of Polyphony and Toyota test the system on a Toyota F-86 and Kazunori Yamauchi races a real life driver on a PS3.

Around the Network

that has great potential!

just imagine gran turismo players racing a celebrity race driver in real time in a real car :)

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Just drive your car in a real life circuit and export the data to GT5 to try to train and beat your own real time.

Just EPIC!!!
