You voted for Nintendo to abandon hardcore gamers so they could make some more money. Hilarious really.

The general consensus is that the 360 and PS3 are systems for hardcore gamers.

Microsoft's H&E division: approximately $2.5 billion in losses since launch of the 360.
Sony's gaming division: approximately $3 billion in losses since launch of the PS3.

Does it make sense to cater to hardcore gamers?

If they stripped out all those trojan horse media features and just made hardcore games on a box that was deisgned to be sold at a reasonable break even price, and didn't both heavily target FPS fans, PS3 and 360 would both be very profitable. So going after the hardcore does make sense, they just both went at it the wrong way becuse they both have alterior motives. Nintendo is the opposite. They want to make money; lots of it, anyway possible, even if it doesn't involve/barely involes core gamers.
