Sony are far better and more experienced than MS at attracting a wider, more casual market. Blu Ray support for the PS3 and the multimedia capabilities of the PSP do not appeal specifically to core gamers. The use of features not directly related to gaming has always been one of Sony's key strategies to conquering this wider market.
Established franchises such as Singstar, Buzz, Ratchet & Clank, Jak, Eyetoy and even Gran Turismo alongside new IPs like Little Big Planet and Home exemplify Sony's capacity to appeal to the casual market. The PS3 lies somewhere between the hardcore 360 and the casual Wii.
