First let me say I am not trolling. Any time anyone asks this question they are automatically marked as trolling, but it is a damned legitimate question. That never seems to get the legitimate response it deserves.
Why did someone last year decide to purchase a PS3. The console that by far cost the most money. The console that has an anemic launch lineup. The console that had a terrible launch year library. While the other two consoles were cheaper, and had better lineups. Even the hardware was a crap shoot. Nobody knew if the new format would actually fly. Hell the console was a massive gamble.
The answer to that question comes in two parts. The first part is that a consumer bought into the name brand recognition. The second part is that they bought the console for the potential promise of less then a handful of games. Nobody said the reasoning was sound. The reasoning was most assuredly not sound. To pretend it was logical is far fetched.
Time and again last year the conversation rotated around two things the brand name meant something, and these three or four games, are games someone had to have. Among those games were Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Grand Theft Auto, and GT. Despite all proof to the contrary there was even an expectation that suddenly the PS3 would suddenly develop a fantastic library far beyond the competition.
Well the brand name recognition hasn't necessarily brought success, or spun forth a PS2 level library. Most of the must have titles are also to be found on the 360, and the 360 still has a far more substantial library. This is not likely to change. I suspect that a great many of these lash outs are actually pent up rage and self loathing.
Many of these posters going off the band wagon were upset with their console choice long before this announcement. For them this development might have been the last excuse they were clinging to. I think this title going to the 360 also was a combination of the last straw and the perfect excuse. They can now allow themselves to be mad at Sony, and since they are mad they now have a justification to do what they have secretly longed to do, but perhaps were too proud to confess.
They have somewhat of a point when they are mad at Sony they are just not telling the entire story. They are not just mad about Sony losing this exclusive it goes far deeper that that they have been mad about the gaming drought, getting shafted on the price front, the library being unbalanced, Sony not buying games for the console, and so forth.
Will some of these posters change their mind tomorrow well probably. I wouldn't accuse all of them of being well balanced, or at least rationally thinking things through. However there is probably a good number of them that are sincere about their decision. I wouldn't necessarily call it stupid either. Standing with a product that isn't meeting your expectations, and wasn't likely to meet your needs in the first place is stupid. Realizing your error, and correcting it no matter how late in a generation is always a smart move.
I think it is safe to say a person who was already satisfied with their PS3 probably wouldn't have gone off the rails the way some did today. Those who did probably had some festering problems, and resentments against Sony. Which even if they turn the other cheek tomorrow just means they will simmer that much longer.
Hell were the PS3 to get Halo 3, Mass Effect, Crackdown, or any other number of 360 titles I wouldn't go off the rails. The PS3 getting Bioshock doesn't phase me none. By the way PS3 owners buy that game it is wonderful. Those things do not phase me, because I am content with my console. I absolutely have what I want in my 360.
