No, it's obviously not the same magnitude. The equivalent would be Warner announcing Bluray support, not dropping HD-DVD support.
I don't think this will have a massive effect on console sales. But it will definitely boost XBox360 sales and diminish PS3 sales. I don't think it'll be a drastic game changer, but it obviously hurts the PS3, which needs every bit it can get.
