I don't think the mods are too trigger happy with banning, some people get a little heated over a topic once and a while and say a few things that are outside the rules
Banning isn't really a "Coming of Age" rite, but the chances are higher of someone really annoying you the more active you are in the forum.
No, I've never been banned but I lost my old account due to an on going error in the password system.
