 I'll try to track down how to change it for you, but until then you can use ctrl+shift click to open in background, or just the middle click.

 Sadly I don't think there is a way to edit that. The people at the Opera forum might be able to help more (never been there) but I can't find it on the website nor as an option in the browser. Sorry I can't be of more help.
