Sony has said their next console will be digital download exclusive
I imagine Microsoft may try to follow suit.
Such a decision would certainly mean the end of either company though as this really only offers a convenience to the publishers, not the consumers. There are so many problems and inconsistancies with this avenue. The most viable solution would be to offer both discs and streaming/download for the same game.
