I gotta echo most others and go with Hendrix. He taught himself how to play. He couldn't read music. He played a right-handed guitar, left-handed. The man ate lightning and shit thunder.
After him, I'd probably go with:
Satch
Eddie
Steve Vai
Randy Rhodes
Dave Mustaine
too many good ones, really, I could go all night.
For the record, Cliff Burton is the best bass player, imo.
Followed by Steve Harris.
