Donkey Kong Country (especially DKC2) were great games. Some of the most fun I had on the SNES. I still go back and play them sometimes, and I enjoy them thoroughly. The soundtrack to DKC2 is easily one of the top 5 on the SNES.
Banjo Kazooie was also great, and it was not a clone of Mario 64. It very much had it's own personality and humor, and the levels were just as much fun, if not more fun than those in Mario 64. Of course, it borrowed elements from SM64, but many games did, as SM64 defined 3D platforming. But it goes well beyond "clone" status.
Diddy Kong Racing is still my favorite racing game ever. Yes, I like it more than any Mario Kart. (though I really like MK too)
Whether or not a developer is overrated is purely opinion. I don't know anything about Rare's newer games, but back in the days of the SNES and N64, they were one of the best developers out there. In my opinion, of course.
