Is it the stronger/better player who gets the reward, or just the one who's logged more hours? People who've played a game for 100 hours should have plenty of advantages (knowledge of weapons, map familiarity, practice, etc.) over noobs without piling on game mechanics to reinforce that inequity.
I've never played CoD4, so I don't really know how bad it is, but I'm seeing TF2 start to head down this path. So far, the weapon upgrades at least have some kind of tradeoff, but it's definately altering the nature of the game as they come out. And these rewards encourage the wrong kind of behavior to unlock. You can either hack them, spend hours getting esoteric achievements on servers set up expressly for the purpose (what fun!), or play like an idiot trying to do stupid stuff like ubering scouts or sneaking up on enemies and taunting them.
I'm developing a dislike of RPG-like leveling in a multiplayer game.
