I feel like too many people are missing the point of what E-Day stands for on the business side of things.
Xbox was 100% aware that E-Day was not going to pull the numbers it otherwise would have. This was part of an article that GameSpot wrote when they interviewed CSO Matthew Ball, "Matthew Ball went on to acknowledge that certain Xbox exclusives will sell fewer units than they might otherwise if they were multiplatform, but that is a short-term issue, and making these changes will help Xbox’s console business grow in the future".
There's only been 2 notable hardware pushing exclusives that Xbox has released this gen with Halo Infinite and Starfield. Both disappointing in multiple regards, but after that, the rug was pulled.
Now for the last few years, messaging has been about "you don't need to buy an Xbox" so no one bought an Xbox. Now we're at the point where due to intentional sabotage over these years by Phil and co both reallocating Series X's for xCloud, and intentionally lowering manufacturing supply, Asha cannot manufacture more consoles than what they currently can due to shortages, and by extension, insanely high prices.
So E-Day is also a victim of how the Xbox brand has been handled this gen.
Ultimately, whether E-Day was successful or not, the point of the game was short term pain for long term gain. It's one of the first major steps in restoring player trust in Xbox that the console players come first. And a major part of that is console exclusivity. But it takes WAY more than just a single title. It's going to take years of consistent tentpole releases for things to start to change. Something Phil failed in recognizing.
I will say that Gears currently doesn't have the pull it once did, but there's always a new generation to introduce new players to older franchises. If they're able to get the budget more in check going forward, there's still a place for Gears to be successful.
