The most simple, practical and obvious conclusion to draw is that his opinion is that the Wii is a poor console from a Dev standpoint and that Nintendo doesn't do enough to foster gaming as an art form. The Subsequent retraction of those statements are because the company he works for has much to gain with the Wii.
I would say it is much, much simpler than anyone would state ... Some developers get into the industry because they're really interested in what can be done with state of the art graphics, physics and AI; Jon Carmack would probably be the most famous of these people. They would probably dislike the Wii because it is not an improvement in anything that they care about. The reality is that there are tons of reasons why people become developers, and the super-technical ones are in the minority.
