That argument is always weak. Human drivers kill and mutilate so much people every day. Self-driving cars don't need to be perfect, if they are on average better than human drivers than it is already a big win for the reduction of human suffering. |
There is also a lack of imagination of potential solutions in these accounts. The solution to the responsibility problem of self-driving car injuries is to cooperativize, municipalize, or nationalize the car fleet, as we should with any other public transportation infrastructure. Then through direct control the public can invest in safer iterations of these technologies through co-production. In so much as private fleets are allowed, then they should be required to have comprehensive insurance.
I've said it in other threads on the topic, but people sooner imagine the end of the world before they imagine the end of (or apparently even a slight moderation of) capitalism. This becomes a problem, because just saying "end all development of a wide array of technologies that fall under an umbrella label - AI" isn't an actual solution to the problems of technological disruption. The problems are economic and social problems that can only be solved through the coordination and a mass movement of the working class. But 50 years of neo-liberalism has ended in a learned helplessness, so it is understandable why people don't think alternatives are possible.
